4- Sunday, May 26, 1985 - North Shore News A Canada for the fut he hard decisions on a new Canadian foreign policy, if any, have no doubt already been made somewhere in the bowels of Ot- tawa. Yet since Joe Clarke is being nice enough to ask our opinion anyway, might as well do a quick viewpoint fandango, ch? can + strictly personal by Bob Hunter | First of all, 1! think Canada is beautifully posi- tioned, believe it or not, to have a serious effect on the fate of the earth. [ve thought this for a long time and not even the repeated failings of most levels of government have succeeded in killing my sense that this country does have something important to offer the future. Without getting into a na- tionalistic frenzy about it, I think Canada’s opportunity “can be spelled out fairly simply. We are a nation that consists of virtually ALL the people on earth. ] mean, can you think of a nationality not represented in the ‘famous Canadian, ethnic mosaic? That mosaic, un- comfortable as it mays be to some from time to time, is the source of whatever greatness we might achieve, in my humble opinion. Canada is rather like a planet that was colonized tong after the rise and fall of civilization on the home world. Everybody who came here, including for openers the people who were here longest, already had had their fill of long, com- plicated national histories. While they might still be caught up in their own ethnocultural drama, they also were forced to acquire Datsun B SERVICE CENTRE FOR THE (All make | collision i ; (all: make mechanical repairs) Toyota Chev 7/4 sim repairs Free (BY APP’T) ~ Rental Car ICBC CLAIMS | Handled Promptly All Paint & Body work Fully Guaranteed ‘For appointment call Mike Ruggles AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY another identity. That double, or hyphenated, identity makes it easier by far to grow into the idea of a third identity, which is as a planetary citi- zen, an Earthling. And this is the identity people everywhere need to acquire, if any sort of evolution is to continue. We aren't a race, obvious- ly. We are a multi-race. We are directly related to everyone, everywhere. If that isn’t a strength to play on in the future, | don't know what is, because we are moving into a global cra for sure. The technology of travel and communications is wiping out barriers, even . political ones. Yes, but what bearing does all this have on Canada’s new foreign poli- cy? It seems to me that our ultimate usefulness as a bridge over troubled waters can only be achieved if we actually do stand on our own feet. And how do we do that? In a nutshelj, we do four things: 1) Build a citizen militia like the Swiss and the Israelis, pull back from NATO, where we play little more than a token role, and concentrate on a high-tech, in-depth defence of our chunk of North America; 2) Enter into some kind of North American “Common Market arrangement’ with the U.S. and Mexico, because our present trade barrier system is going to Strangle us in the end, and unless we pull out of the economic quagmire excessive government regulatic:. and overprotection has gott:n us into, we’re not going to have Ford any clout anyway; 3) Adopt an_ industrial strategy, like the Japanese, whereby we target on mar- kets where it is possible for us to win, i.e. communica- lions, aerospace, transporta- tion, resource extraction, DORIE HANSON ¢ Visions # intuition » Hunches ¢ Feelings BALANCE PHYSICAL, MENTAL & SPIRITUAL FORCES through the CYCLES OF LIFE 0-7-14-21-28-35-42-49-56-63-70-77 « Your Past, present & future © Meet Your spiritual guides _ © Realize your personality type INNER PEACE MOVEMENT LECTURE $4. I like to give ample warning, yelling aloud, “Five days to my big day!” Or, “Don't forget the Hollandaise.” Special treats like breakfast in bed are a great way to begin the day. Even better is winning money. Not too long ago I had a profitable breakfast. | won a hundred bucks at a Seattle Seminar, for the marketing of Crash Pad. Great way to start the day. Big honour coming from my auto body compatriots. Bringing Home the Bacon, Well my sons, who work at Crash Pad, and I didn’t exactly bring home the pork, but we did do well with the winnings. One son, An- drew, won a weekend at the fancy Red Lion, jacuzzi and all. Another son, Owen, won a prize in the exhibitor's draw at the Autobody Craftsmen Show. The best part of all this winning, is that our customers win too.
