TEL gets its way, North Shore telephone users will face six per cent increases for the full range of services. B.C. Tel has applied for a six per cent interim rate in- crease that, if approved by the Canadian Radio- Television and Telecom- munications Commission (CRTC), will go into into ef- fect July 1. The company would follow that with an October filing for a general rate increase. Under the proposed new rate structure, the basic cost of a residential telephone would go from $12.10 a month to $12.85 in North Vancouver and from $12.60 a month to $13.35 tn West Vancouver. Business rates would also increase with individual business lines going to $39 70 trom $37.45 in North Van and to $42 90 from $40 4§ tn West Van. Society has chairmen of both West and North Vancouver School Districts worried about the effects it could have on_ enrollment —based funding from the provincial government. West Vancouver schools trustees met in a special: in- - camera meeting onday night to discuss a /request from the independent school society to rent one of its clos- ed schools..West Vancouver could be the hardest hit. **We are at critical number,’? warned chairman Dawn Sikula. ‘‘If our ’ numbers (school enrollment) drop below 5000, it has a serious effect on the fiscal framework.”’ Sikula estimated that the school district could lose as many as 100 students to the independent ‘school. Present- ‘ ly West Vancouver loses 350 to 400 school children a year to other districts or other in- dependent schools.
