GEE entertainment ANN MORTIFEE She has lots to sing about A YEAR HAS PASSED since Ann Mortifee ap- peared at Plazazz the first in a distinguished line-up of musicians at the North Vancouver club. By NANCY WEATHERLEY She’s back this week to celebrate the first year’s an- niversary of promoter Sam Yehia’s new policy. He's celebrating ending the year in the black. And it’s been a year since Ann was interviewed by the News. She’s apologetic at the beginning because she’s had such a quiet year there isn’t much for her to talk about. She’s conceived, written and acted in a full musical production Reflections on Crooked Walking, appeared in a New York production of Jacques Brel is Alive and Well, worked on various small writing and musical projects, and begun a mam- moth world-wide charity pro- ject. A very quiet year. Ann thinks on a grandiose scale, the bigger and more challenging a project is, the more she likes it. “If something comes up and plagues me, I'll do it.’’ Ann is currently working on a two person show, with one man and one woman, but it ‘*hasn’t jelled yet. It might be a play with music, or else a play without music, or else, or else, or else....’’ Part of the celebration, when Ann opens her 10 day Plazazz engagement, Thurs- day, will be over the release of her new album, Born to Live. Her show will include songs from the new album, some new tunes, and some tamiliar old ones Apart from her business projects, Annis working ona larger vision, a global com puter network for relef and development aid that she hopes will be presented at bx po 86 in Vancouver Like most of ber ideas, tas on an Olymprx scale She en sismons eventually having a computer network im place through which anyone, anywhere in the world who needs help, or has resources tO give, can connect with the corresponding party Ann sees it as a chance tor “ordinary people who want to contribute to making sure 4) million people a vear don't dic oof starvation because that’s not acceptable 7 She describes a person who might be oon terested in South Yemen, have teaching skills and be a fvctitionvas Picmess fies in etal Fi) DOUBLE BILL 84.00 “ * REE pl Bate at as Christian. The computer might then come up with two schools being built, one by the Jesuits and another by southern Baptists. Her main concern is that at the present time, there is no vehicle for bringing together different groups who could co-operate when both are working in the same area. As one who has quite a history of travelling in developing countries and working on charitable causes, Ann is only too aware of how often well-meaning efforts are frustrated by bureaucracy, or simply ignorance of how to help or where to go to get help. She took her idea and decided to see how far she could get. Now Ann_ has some valuable contacts and some help, ‘‘I know it’s going to happen.”’ But like all of her other large projects she is taking it one step at a time. Sull, the skeleton should be in effect by Expo 86, but the number of people involv- ed, and the amount.of money available will decide the size and speed of the operation. Anyone interested in help- ing (particularly with fun- ding) should call Scott An- drew at 733-0065. See and hear Ann Mortifee at Plazazz October 6 to 15.
