With summer upon us and
vacation time already here,
it makes good sense to check
your car over before you
leave on that well-earned
trip.

The whole procedure
doesn't take that long and it
could ensure that you'll have
a safe and happy time away.

The Canada Safety Coun-
cil reports that about seven
per cent of all traffic ac-
cidents in Canada are due
directly to mechanical mal-
functions. With more than
12 mithon drivers on the
roads in this country, it
becomes clear that many
hundreds of lives can be sav-
ed by checking vehicles. The
statistics are grim but there
are more than $00,000 ac-
cidents in Canada each year
in which more than 200,000

people are injured and about
5,000 killed.

Shell Canada and _ the
other Canada Safety Council
offer the following check list
to help you in your efforts
towards getting your car
ready.

*Your lights and tum
signals should work proper-
ly, as well as your brake and
back-up lights.

*Your car's hor should
be in good working order.

*The safety belts in your
vehicle, in proper condition,
have proven to be effective
in saving lives.

Make sure your tires are
properly inflated.

eCheck your brakes, the
brake fluid level and brake
linings.

*Keep your battery clean
and battery fluid at recom-

mended levels.

Make sure the exhaust

system functions properly
(always be alert in a closed
car for drowsiness or head-
aches).
