EE entertainment It sure ain’t Shakespeare By KELLY JO BURKE VANCOUVER Playhouse’ last production of the season, Dry Rot is blatantly, unabashedly farce. It says so right in the program, ac- companied by a little essay on why the farce is a misunderstood art from. British vaudeville tunes introduce the show, costumes are bright and fake, characters bold, and Situations unlikely. It ain't Shakespeare, but after a long day of work, some want great people don't gedy. They just want a little diversion. Dry Rot's plot has very little to do with anything. Essentially, there are shady characters, drippy lovers, hapless bumblers, and out- raged decent folk, all shut up in the Bull and Cow Inn, somewhere in the peaceful British countryside. They -Clash, bash, and generally get in each other's way in the days preceding a horse race, in which almost all of them have a vested interest. i LA e anu iS UpPpdh y timed, which is critical to a successful physical comedy. No one performance stands out, though some are better than others. Camille Mitchell, whose portrayal of of Ariel saved a rather dismal production of The Tempest last month, begins the evening rather unevenly. Her character, Beth, the inn’s_ eccentric maid, is a fairly limited one, but Mitchell makes the most of it. Once she is given the space to develop. the character's bizarre physical . quirks, Beth becomes a cast high point. Jay Brazeau and Norman Browning, as Alf the race- fixer and his lackey Fred, make a delightful pair of crooks. They are reminiscent, in appearance and manner, of Laurel and Hardy. They play the schemer and dope com- bination for all it’s worth. Of the straight per- formers, only Marjorie LeStrange, as the matronly wife of the inn’s owner, deserves special mention.
