An application by Van- couver Wharves to construct an additional methanol Storage tank was rejected Monday night in a heated debate at North Vancouver District council. “I wish this council would decide whether it wants to kick industry out, because if it does Fll move to a more sensible community where I'll get some tax relief from the presence of industry,” Alderman Peter Powell said. Alderman-Jim Ball added, “I'm sick of thwarting every development proposal that comes up — if we're going to reject it, let’s reject it outright so at least they know where they stand.” But Mayor Don Bell and Aldermen Mary Segal and mie Crist said it was inappropriate to approve the additional storage tank that would hold four million gallons (U.S.) of methanol before the Task Force on Hazardous Materials had reported. They wanted to defer the application until the Task Force reports in October, but the motion was defeated in a_ three-way _ split. Alderman Gordon Rose was absent. A motion to approve the application was also defeated in a three-way split -- and tempers flared. McDonald had_ recom- mended approval of the application, saying fire department approval would include requirements that the installations meet stringent fire safety stan- dards.
