Your craft is still perfectly lit by a golden glow, but the hungry shadows of- evening are reaching out for it. A decision has to be made— now. _ Yes, ithere is still enough time fot the perfect photo— smile everybody-klick! Then one week later,—‘'What happened? Look at this shot, its so dark and blueish. Damn, | can’t recognize one face!. They are all in the shadow of the wheelhouse! How often has that hap- pened to you? For a whole week you wait patiently for the pictures to return from the lab; and all you can do is show -your friends your weekend—pictures that need a lot of colourful description. I have learned from many disappointments and hide everything that is not good enough to explain itself. tt “ Your joy of boating can be. preserved forever with a good camera, but taking good pictures involves more than just snapping the shutter. If you want a- picture of your boat, set up a shot of the boat with people . in it. Happy people. Don’t just ‘grab’ the shot. Step. back and take a few seconds —to'calm to frame it. But don’t step back too far—you might end up-in.the drink-—without a good picture but very happy people. Make sure the subjects aren’t covered with dark shadows. ° I always decide before- hand what I want to show. If it’s people, I move in close. If it’s scenery, I move back. If I try to include too many things the picture , loses, its impact. I like to warn the casual photographer not to attempt a picture from a moving boat urfless he can dial a fast shutter speed on the camera. I advise a shutter speed of at least a 250th of a second—and even ~ then boat vibration or a sudden * movement of the -boat can fuzz the shot. Because water reflects sunlight, there is generally more light available than it would seem. When you look at the sun reflection in the water, you squint your eyes. Well, the automatic light- meter of your camera does the same, but the picture will turn out slightly under- exposed.
