Lost campers soaked but safe

A weekend camping
expedition to the top of
Mount Seymour went
wrong for two youths
when they became
engulfed in thick fog,
wandered off the trail
and got hopelessly lost.

The two backpackers
were eventually found
Monday morning after an
all-night search by volunteer
members of the North and
West Vancouver Emergency
Program rescue team.

And apart from being
soaking: wet, after a
breakfast of fried eggs in the
back of the rescue truck, the
two seemed to have suffered
no obvious health problems
from their extra unplanned
night on the mountain.

The rescuers had been
called in at about midnight
Sunday, with about 15
searchers scouring the

mountainside in the driving
rain and thick fog.

About 7 a.m. a further
nine joined the 15 who were
already on the hunt and at
about 9 a.m. a crew led by

Tim Cassidy, aged 18, of
109 Queen’s Avenue, New
Westminster,‘ and 17-year-
old Duncan Handley, of

an overnight camping trip on
Seymour.

RCMP were alerted when
the two failed to return
home as planned by 7 pm.
Sunday.

They were found on a
