Page 12, January 31, 1979 - North Shore News _ An application by the’ North Shore Community ‘Credit Union for a shopping centre in the Maplewood area. at 2025 Dolarton Highway met with a mixed reception by the Policy and Planning Committee of North Vancouver District council Monday night. The land, which is already zoned for such a purpose, isa triangular shaped site lying between existing Mohawk _ and Esso service stations and - Opposite the Riverside Mews townhouse development. The Credit Union is reques- ting a siting area amendment _,{© permitthe development. The committee heard that _the proposed shopping ‘centre would contain, in addition to a large Credit Union building, a drug store, food store, baker, butcher, gocer, barber, a laundromat and professional offices. The total area would be 27,910 - sq. ft. plus more than . adequate parking and. load- ing spaces. Alderman Marilyn Baker said she had noticed that the proposal was not looked upon too favorable by District — - staff. She noted that the site had once been earmarked for use by ICBC as a claims centre but this had not been followed up. The use of the site had always been conten- tious, but she proposed that the appropriate bylaw be prepared so that a public hearing into the matter could be held. Alderman Peter Powell agreed with Baker that the matter should go to public . bearing, and Alderman Lakes also agreed, subject to the implementation of con- ditions suggested by District staff. Alderman Mary Segal, however, opposed the proposal because, she said, it conflicted with established Seymour development policy. Aldermen Jim Ball and Gordon Rose were also hesitant to support the application and felt. as it was probable in the long run that the proposal would be defeated, that it would be better to “*kill’’ it during the present meeting rather than let it drag on. Alderman Baker pointed out that council has never ayreed upon a_ definitive policy for Seymour and that there was no reason at this time to believe that the proposal was doomed. She insisted that a public hearing was needed to éstablish the pros and cons of. this development and, with fur- thur support from Alderman Lakes, a motion was carried authorizing staff to prepare a by-law - the first necessary step toward a public hearing. District staff had commen- ted that, in terms of commercial policy for Seymour, they could not support a scheme that would result in a centre much larger than required for the Maplewood neighbourhood. or which would represent a conflict with the centre included in council's Seymour Policy statement o .
