it will mean ‘a shareholder in B.C.’ | Premier Bennett's big BCRIC handout By PATRICK DURRANT On August 6. 1979 most people in British Columbia will become Shareholders in a publicly-owned comp- any whose shares will. trade on the Vancouver Stock Exchange. The company is the British Columbia Resources In- vestment Corporation. (BCRIC). It was created by the present provincial government to take over several corporate in- vestments that had been acquired from private in- terests by the previous NDP administration. BCRIC also acquired from the govern- ment a licence to explore for oil and gas on Crown lands in northeastern B.C. Who will be entitled to receive the shares? Exactly what assets does the cor- poration own? And what will ownership of the shares mean to the citizens of this province? ~ Everyone who is a Canadian citizen, or has applied for citizenship, and who has lived in B.C. for at least one year is eligible for five free shares. Those age 16 and over will apply in their own names; _ for children under 16, ap- plication will be made by the mother or guardian; children under one year are eligible if they were born in B.C. and have lived here since birth. Also eligible are people who are ordinarily residents. but are temporarily absent from the province — for example, students attending school elsewhere. Applicants for the shares will have to furnisk some identification, such as driver's licence, as evidence of eligibility. Rulings on eligibility in individual cases will be made by government agents throughout’ the province. FIVE FREE SHARES About March 15, B.C. residents will receive in the mail a Ietter from the government describing how they can apply for the five free shares, and how they can subscribe, if they wish, to purchase’ additional shares to a maximum of 5,000 per person. Ap- plications for shares will be accepted until June 15. The corporation paid the . government $151 532,950, in the form of a demand note when the assets were transferred to it. The ‘price was set following an ap- raisal of the assets by four investment firms. CONTINUED ON PAGE 20 PACE ARROW OKANAGAN CAMPERS, VAN CONVERSIONS 5TH WHEELS.
