Champa Xayasomphou, 22, ' Simon Mithmuangmeua, 20, Juan Rivas, 18, Viano Sifounthone, 20, and Jack ' Keojanock, 20, were all involved in a heist at Park Royal South last Thursday. Between them, Xayasomphou, Sifounthone, ' Mithmuangmeua, and - Keojanock robbed branches of Birks and Lugaro jewelry stores at the mall. Wearing balaclava masks, _ the foursome smashed through jewelry cases at both stores using Joaded handguns. They made off with a large quantity of jewels. They were cornered and arrested by West Vancouver Police after a dramatic car chase through Ambleside, in which jewels, guns, and a spare tire were thrown out of their esca vehicle at a pursuing police o cer. Ali. five men have been charged with 10 counts of armed robbery. Xayasomphou, Keojanock, Sifounthone, Mithmuangmeua_ were is charged with wearing a disguise to commit an_ indictable offence, while Rivas — identi- fied by, police as the getaway driver — has been charged with dangerous driving and instigat- ing a police pursuit. Jim Almas said after the men were taken into custody, officers discovered two additional getaway vehi- cles registered to the suspects, as well as “a change of clothes,” in a parking lot on the corner of Pylor Way and Clyde Ave. Alias said the suspects’ escap: had been foiled by wit- nesses and by the quick response of Park Royal security staf. “What really helped is the fact that police had a licence number and a description (of the men) within minutes,” he said. On Dee. 5, 1999, Francis Ko returned to Canada after a five-week trip to Shanghai and Hong Kong and declared $450 in clothing and souvenirs at the Vancouver International Airport. The personal limit allowed for such a trip is $750. According to Canada Customs, during a routine search, customs officials dis- covered a receipt from a Hong Kong jewelry store for a dia- mond engagement ring valued at approximately $10,000. When officials began to con- duct a personal search, Ko pro- duced the undeclared ring from her brassiere and was charged. Provincial Court Judge J.R.
