Youth Services Society,
Seymour Community Services
Society, a number of North
Shore businesses and the two

‘. Kick The Nic’s objective is
to enable participants to
become smoke-free. The pro-
gram involves education,
awareness and the develop-

ment of life skills — skills that ~

equip teens-to make positive
choices throughout their lives.

The teens, aged 13 to 18
have made a commitment to
give up smoking alrogether.
Since the program began,
three have already quit and
another nine have reduced
their cigarette consumption
by 50%.

“Enhancing skills is the
foundation upon which we
can tackle tobacco use among
teens,” said North Shore

Health Region community
health nurse Linda Davis, an
organizer of the program.

“There are a variety of rea-
sons why teens smoke. Simply
telling them the health risks is
one thing. The best wey is to
support them in making posi-
tive lifestyle choices so they
can take charge of their own
lives.”

Kick The Nic is a 10-week

program designed by teens,
for teens. It provides an envi-
ronment of positive peer sup- ~
port to help them kick their
tobacco habit. The program
was put together at the two
schools by Davis and fellow
community health nurse Stacy
Rempel in partnership with
yout outreach = workers
Heather Kristofferson and
Megan Collins.

recently feft B.C. Lottery
Corporation with smiles and
over $259,000 in prize
money.

Shirley Williams, 44, and
Bill Dickison, 45, won
$131,561 when their Super
7 ticket correctly matched six
numbers plus the bonus.

Said Williams, a letter car-
rier with Canada Dost, “We
thought it could be worth a
few thousand dollars.

“We were pretty excited
when we found out how
much we had really won.”

Williams, a mother and
grandmother, and Dickison,
a warehouse man with
Innovation Giftware, are
now shopping for a new
vehicle.

Lennea Lingle had the
whole family involved when
she discovered she had won
$53,006 in the 6/49 lottery.

“I was running around
looking for a pen so I could
write down the numbers
from the TV because they
sounded familiar,” said the
46-year-old mother of three
and grandmother of two.

“With two teenagers in
the house. you can never
find a pen when you need
one.

“My boys came running
after rae as well, asking what
was happening. I yelled, ‘I
think we’ve won the lottery.’
Even my dog was running

around: with me and bark-
ing.”

The operations secretary
with Shoppers Drug Mart is
planning on “treating the
family, upgrading the house,
and getting 2 good haircut.”

Maicke Andresen, 31, and
Connie Findlay, 58, won
their prizes instantly while
playing Scratch & Win tick-
ets.

Andresen won an impres-
sive $50,000 and Findlay a
cool $25,000.

Vancouver hias been award-
ed a scholarship from the
Certified General
Accountants Association of
British Cobimbia (CGA-
B.C.}.

Every year, the association
offers scholarships to sec-
ondary school students to
offset the financial costs of
their post-secondary educa-
tion.

Yeung won $600 to fur-
cher her education in an
accounting related program.

CGA ILC. awards 20 of
these schelarships annually to
students who are entering, 2
B.C. or Yukon university, 3
