Jim Humphries Charles Lawrence Boothroyd West Vancouver Bob Hunter’s stand on zoos supported Dear Editor: This letter is a rebuttal to Cap- tain R.L. Hall’s open letter to Bob Hunter, Reader Slams Hunter on Aquarium Stance. His letter was in response to Bob Hunter’s Dec. 21, 1988, column on the death of the baby killer whale in the Stanicy Park Aquarium. 1 want to say that I am in total agreement with Mr. Hunter's views and I feel that Captain Hall was overly critical and, also, misin- formed. | feel Mr. Hunter is a car- ing, sensitive individual who is op- posed to cruelty and the exploita- tion of animals and mammals, in sharp contrast to the policies and practices of many zoos. Animals in zoos are often kept in inadequate, unnatural condi- tions and live out their tives cou- fined to pathetic boredom and apathy. I wonder if Captain Hall is aware that, to get a ‘“‘specimen"’ for display in a zoo, whole animal families in the wild are often killed to get one baby of the species. | refer to Dian Fossey’s accounts of the slaughter of families of African mountain gorillas and the conse- quent injury and suffering endured by the captured baby gorillas while awaiting shipment to zoos. I am completely opposed to the principles of zoos. An animal should not be subjected to a life- time of confinement just to give mankind something at which to gawk. How much nicer, and more realistic, to view wildl,. on film in their natural, wild state. D. de la Mare North Vancouver Statement may cause grief Dear Editor: I attended a recent open house in the District of North Van- couver. The house for sale includ- ed an illegal registered suite, which a prospective buyer was concerned about. She required this mortgage- helper in order to purchase, but wondered what would happen in 1995, when she would no longer be able to rent the basement suite. “There won’t be any problem,’’ the real estate agent assured her. “You'll be able to continue renting as before. Council isn’t serious about this, or there may even be a new council by then.”’ It’s obvious that this type of say-anything-to-get-a-sale philoso- phy is going to cause a great deal of unnecessary hardship six years from now. Is this the line being taken by local realtors? Or did I just stum- ble across a bad egg? G. So maybe they are stealing after all.”’ Can it be assumed that immigrants who buy homes pay school taxes? If so, then they are stealing as much as any of us who have children in the public school system. One of the main reasons we get a ‘free’ education is so that our children will have the qualifications to become employable and productive citizens. This in the end is a benefit for all of us. Possibly Mr. Collins would like to see a user-pay educational system in Canada. In the same issue of March 12, Mr. Bob Hunter sends mixed feelings in his column. On the one hand he tells us not to be ethno-centric, but on the other hand he warns us that we are for sale and aie about to be bought just like the Indians were bought out. This begs the question: Are we going to end up on white reservations? And how soon? The current immigration trends and policies are challenging our perceptions of what is Canada and who is a Canadian. | would appreciate reading some opinions that do not provoke fear or hate.
