28 — Sunday, October 26, 1997 — North Shore News The nei Many moves later, shoe business still in Lonsdale By Deana Lancaster News Reporter deana@nsnews.com HELEN Fung isn’t sure how old the machinery is in her shoe repair shop. Most of it appears to be from the earlier part of this century — heavy, elaborate and ornare. Her sewing machine is an old Singer. There are vises, clamps, and a machine that butts, polishes and sands shoes. Fung and her family have been in the shoe repair business for 28 yea cy moved into the storefront at 110 East 14th St. more than three years ago. That was when she was forced out of her old location at 1434 Lonsdale for the redevelopment of the Scotia Bank. But Modern Shoe Renew has settled back into the area nicely. As well as the machinery, there are stacks and shelves full of shoes, boots, sandals and slip- pers; a rack of reading, glasses for sale because the library is just across the street; and a shelf of knick- knacks and ornaments covered by glass. Fung likes the ncighborhood. Most of her cus- tomers are regulars. “In North Vancouver, the people are really nice. My customers help me. Before, I only speak a little bit of English. They help me to learn.” Other customers have shown her how to knit a sweater, how to cook western food, and even how to dance. That’s why, when she has to move again at the end of November, she won’t be going far. The businesses at the south-east corner of Lonsdale are making way for a mixed-use commercial and resi- dential development by Fairmont Pacific Properties. ng’s biggest concern is moving all the heavy equip- ent up the road to the new location at 17th and Lonsdale. The effort required may not be worth it. Bur with or without her ofd machines, Fung plans NEWS photo Mike Wakefield HELEN Fung of Modern Shee. Renew is getting ready to fullest move her 28-year-old business to 17th and Lonsdale.
