WHEN you think about the changes that have occurred — not just in the wortd itself, politically and geo- graphically — but in the mores of our times, whew, it’s a wonder we aren’t ail going gaga. Maybe we are, of course, and can no longer identify what precisely we expected of our old age. The loose structure of families, in these times; the radically changed role of women and the inevitably casual upbringing of the chil- dren they bear. And the enormous distor- tion of the importance cf money in today’s every activ- ity shocks us, too. In my own case, born into a depression in 1917, and victim of a worse one in the 30s, money was a sometime thing. In those years in the Peace River country there was no place for coins and dollar bills, there were no stores for miles around, almost everything we used and needed, except for our vegetables, came by rail in a parcel from Timothy Eaton. I didn’t even see money let alone handle it and put it in a pocker. My father sent my sister and me each a cheque for 10 dollars at Christmas time, which the Stephen Wong Pharmacist CAPSULE COMMENTS Being pregnant carries great respon- sibility for a healthy lifestyle. Then later, grown up and twaching school for $74 a month — oops, there was 10 cents on top of that, F nearly forgot — there was little opportunity in the bush to part with money, except to pay the people who sheltered me for room and board. The father would have to take the horses and the cut- ter out to go to Prince George to change my cheque into cash and maybe splurge on a pound of sausages for a treat from the moose-meat diet. The whole journey took him most of two days and I rather think he slept with the horses, net in any kind of hotel. It sounds as I write it down like some sort of drama that Mary Pickford would have starred in, we are so unused to such inade- quacies in these days of instant commu- nication and accessible trans- port, plus incredible variety in al! our needs, It should be cause for daily rejoicing, and it is, for us old folk, But at the same time we see what has hap- pened to the foundation, the stable family is eroding, in many cases has already crum- bled. We see daily announce: ments of plans for more day- care space, more and more children are being “brought up.” iF you could call it that, outside the family circle — a circle which has suffered divorce and estrangement and has somehow become a rhomboid. Certainly it does not pro- vide any basis for stability and responsibility for the children. In addition, the money Bikty factor is completely over- turned, where we thought in hundreds it is now millions. We read in the paper that the most bankruptcies fie in the laps of those in their carly 20s who ignore such obligation and instead simply substitute a credit card, which is available to anyone making a $100 a month. Thus is the error com- pounded. We can only watch and wonder how it will turn out. "Brew" is a male Benji-type terrier, silver/beige, height 18 ins.
