24 — Sunday, October 30, 1994 ~ North Shore News Srushes with future lead back to the past WHEN THE rains came back last week, they speiled Science Werld for me and my husband. He’d been biding, he’s a space freak, looking forward to the Omnimax presentation of the frolic in the ship that sailed amongst the stars. That stuff’s way over my head, if you'll pardon the pun, but it gave me my first crack at spending time in the silver sphere loose, on my own, and I looked forward to a quiet prowl into everything. I poked around in rooms with tanks of worms and bees, and other rooms with gorgeous examples of the sewing aris. For quite a while I hung over the stairs above a little forum where science is brought down to earth, and after watching the demonstration of the proper- ties of air, both cold and hot, I got really, enthralled by chal- lenges to try to think on two levels at the same time. An expansion on the pic- ture’s trick; you know, where some peo: rhe see the vase and some the4wo human p:ofiles, and some'are able to switch back and forth. It was very engaging." _ As.Was the sound room, where children jump on “keys” and ail manner of instruments .Surprise the ear, The best part, though, was when ! found an observation perch thai allowed me to watch all the passers-by as well. as the ramp down; which my. particular space- . tipper wouid return to me,’ : What a lot of people, and ; what a mixture. All ages, vari- ‘ous colors, family groups, lone observers like myself, and children, children all over the place. They were hunched over the video screens, querying all the exhibits, playing compli- cated table-games. And there wasn’t on anv childish face a look of diffi- dence or astonishment. Absorption, often, and hilarity — as with the musical pedals ——- and I thought of how lucky they are, and also how sophis- ticated. And I thought about us, you and I, at that age, 78 years ago. We'd never seen an aeroplane (never heard the word, in fact). A lot of us had never seen a ship, or ridden in a car. EATON'S Eleanor Godley es THE VINTAGE YEARS In the North, where even sightings of neighbors were an event, our world consisted of the house, the backyard and barn, acres of rolling prairie and the one-room schoolhouse four miles that away. We had some gramophone records to go onto the crank- up Victrola. Remember Gallicurci? We had a set of ’ The Books of Knowledge, pre- war publications (that was pre- the First War, kiddo). And our mother sang the old songs to us and there were no tele- phones and no movies and our daydreams were mostly fuelled by Eaton’s seasonal catalogue. Our lighting came from a - heavy-bottomed gas-lamp that had to be pumped and have its mantels changed when they finally burned out. So whea I’m in a Science World situation, I can’t help but marvel at the adjustments you and J have made in these years. That we’ve had the aplomb and the resilience to deal with it all without losing our grip. I had another brush with the future when Self Counsel Press, down on Charlotte Street, invited me to see their new computer program Wills . Self-Ware. The program pro- vides practical legal informa- tion and advice, and the will it produces will stand up in any court. { know, you’ll say “how many seniors have their own computers?” Ah, but their farnilies do, in many cases, and to me this adds another attractive dimension, or maybe two or more dimensions to the job of making disposal of the treasures life has bestowed. The family is thus involved together, it takes the curse off it somehow that one’s heirs be privy to what's going to be on the table, so to speak. Chuck Tait gave me a demonstration and would be pleased to taik to you too. To have a look, call him at 986-3366. He has a fax, too: 986-3947.
