hs Tk} rest | Keep valuables locked RETURNING HOME to find that you've been robbed is a fear shared by many homeowners today. Whether you're away on vacation, at work, or just out for the evening, the threat of a burglary looms kirge. Safeguarding jewelry, cash. sen- timental items and other valuables should be a top priority in every housvhold. The surest way to minimize the danger of such theft is to remember that what can’t be seen, can’t he stolen. In other words, keep your valuables out of sight and inaccessi- ble. The good news is that an in-Moor safe makes it easy to give yourself this added protection, and installing one makes an excellent do-it-your- sell home improvement project. An in-foor safe is recognized as an extremely effective security device. The best place for such a sate is imbedded within 4 concrete floor, in a slab, garage or basement. This practically eliminates the likelihood of discovery or having the safe car- ried off. Some models can be fas- tened to a wood floor and then con- cealed with an article of furniture. Inn’s storied past took its toll on original structure FOR THOSE of my readers who haven't guessed by now the destina- tion of the chartered tug, the Le Mars, that 1 wrote about in my col- umn last week, it was the Wigwam inn. NORTH SHORE HERITAGE By Dorcthy Foster This was a special trip up the Inlet to the Inn. The present owners, the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, don’t permit anyone but its mem- bers to either dock there or to enter the Inn. Accompanying us on this voyage was Roy Summerfield, both a member of the yacht club and a historian who knows the area better than anyone. He received permis- sion to conduct this tour through the Inn and around its grounds. The Deep Cove and Area Historical Association, which arranged this outing, presented a pictorial history and an account of the Inn, which they had mounted on a large card to Roy and the Yacht Club on the steps of the Inn when we docked. We then divided into two groups, one to tour the grounds, and the other to proceed with Roy to view the interior of the Inn. As we toured, starting at the lobby, we were told the history of the Wigwam Inn. The Inn is situated at the head of Salmon Arm, and was built in 1909 by the first owner of the property, Benjamin Franklin Dickens. When it became evident that he did not have the financial resources needed to continue with his dream, he took on Count Alvo von Alvensleben as owner and financier of the Inn in 1910. Alvo was the son of a count, and shocked his family and friends by resigning his commission in the Prussian army to pioneer in faraway countries. When he arrived in Vancouver in 1904, he had less than four dollars in his pocket.
