From page 15 NAME: Graham Morfitt HOME TOWN: West Vancouver EVENT: Javelin AGE: 27 PERSONAL BEST: 70.4m COMPETING ON: Saturday, Aug. 27 and Sunday, Aug. 28. Morfitt, a member of the NorWesters since the age of 10, fin- ished third at the Nationals earlier this summer to qualify for the Commonwealth Games. The Sentinel graduate’s expecta- tion for his first Commonwealth experience is to be the top Canadian at the meet. “My parents moved to Victoria a few years back, so I'm really looking forward to competing in their home town,” Morfitt says. His previous international experi- ence includes competing at the World Juniors in Greece in 1986, and a number of university competitions as a member of the SFU track and field team. His competition on the Canadian team includes top-ranked Larry Steinke of Lethbridge, Alberta, and Quebec’s Louis Brault. Another highlight for Morfitt will be competing on the same team as fellow Sentine! and SFU team mem- ber Sara McGladdery. NAME: Alison Sydor HOME TOWN: West Vancouver EVENT: Cycling, teain time trial COMPETING ON: Sunday, Aug. 1. An injury that forced Sydor to pull out of the Tour de France Feminine last month shouldn't be a problem for the veteran cyclist. The North Vancouver native is part of the four-member women’s time trial team. “To the cyclist it feels more like a metre,” Sydor says of the close quar- ters involved in the time trial event, which often involves competitors drafting mere centimetres from the bike in front of them. “It is some- thing you get used to, and as a team, you know each other's riding styles so weil that it is like a dance rather than a race.” Like her teammate, and fellow North Shore resident, Leslie Tomlinson, Sydor competes in both road racing and mountain bike racing events on the international stage. Although it is a relatively new discipline, Sydor has mastered the mountain bike style and has a num- ber of top-three finishes to her credit on the World Cup circuit. She competes for the professional Kahlua cycling team when not com- peting for her country. The 50 km time trial race will be held on the Patricia Bay Highway circuit in North Saanich, Sidney and Central Saanich, NAME: Leslie Tomlinson HOME TOWN: North Vancouver EVENT: Cycling, team time trial AGE: 34 COMPETING ON: 2h. Making the switch from athletics to cycling didn’t slow Tomlinson down. A standout endurance athlete at Sentinel and Simon Fraser University, the national cycling team member started taking bike riding seriously in 1988. She has been a full-fledged member of the national tearm for the past four years, and like Alison Sydor, has enjoyed success on the World Cup mountain bike cir- cuit. As marketing services manager of the Earls restaurant chain, Tomlinson has juggied a business career with cycling for the past few years. “This team is probably one of the strongest women’s teams Canada has ever had,” she says of the team. “We've got a great team work ethic.” At the world championships in Oslo last year, the team finished an impressive sixth overall. By A.P. McCredie Sports Reparter And if you haven't bought tick- ets for the historic Games, don't worry. You still have time to get good seats for most events, includ- ing the opening and closing cere- monies. Due to finalization of seating configurations and the return of blocks of tickets that were held for sponsors and international tour operators, some seats for previous- ly sold-out events are currently up for public sale. Tickets are now available for both preliminaries and finals of all sports at the Games. Ticket prices range from a low of $10 for lacrosse, lawn bow]s and shooting, to upwards of $60 for the finals in athletics, swim- ming and boxing. The average ticket price is $25. Tickets for the opening and closing ceremonies range from $40 to $125, with half the available seats priced at or under $55. To date, £72,000 tickets have been sold of the 360,000 available. This may not seem like a substan- tial number, but the organizing committee reports that, since most of the more expensive seats were purchased first, close to 85% of the projected $7.2 million revenue has been achieved. Tickets can be purchased from TickeiMaster by phone (280-1994) or in person at any TicketMaster outlet. Tickets are also being sold at the individual venues on event days. According to media relations spokesman Howard Markson, seats are expected to Sell very quickly as the Aug. 18 opening ceremonies approaches. Hey kids!
