Lawrence Shannon, the defrocked Irish priest who is now a tour guide and the central figure of the play. ’ Shannon is as bad a tour guide _as he was a priest and, as the play “epens, he struggles up the hill to the hotel Costa Verde where he --will wrestle with his psychological suffering on a cross of his own making before discovering that endurance is the key to salvation.
