MAILBOX Highway priorities must be re-evaluated Dear Editor: Last’ Friday, when returning home via the Second Narrows Bridge. | found myself caught in a long back up on the Upper Levels Highway. When I hit the fincup east of the new overpass at Lonsdale, I assumed there had been an acci- dent. But when I! finally reached Westview, [| realized the back up was caused by traffic volume try- ing to pass through the light at the Westview interchange. The North Shore has been promised overpasses for over 20 years, and with increasing growth and traffic, the stoplights are becoming a nightmare for motorists. As the MLA for West Van- couver-Capilano, | will continue to press the Harcourt government to re-evaluate its highway spend- ing priorities. The NDP government seems quite willing to spend scarce resources On projects in much less populated areas than the Novth Shore; however, shouldn't high- wuy improvements venefit roads that have high traffic volumes? Since the cverpass at Lonsdale was built, and the tunnel under Cassiar constructed, Westview remains the only light on the Trans Canada Highway between Horseshoe Bay and Karaloops. The North Shore needs an overpass at Westview — without one, the Westview interchange is an accident waiting to happen.
