deaths of two close friends. The
result is an honest and powerful
cycle of songs fuelled by anger,
black humor and unblinking emo-
tional examination.

Reed calls it an adult album.
Within the context of popular
music, an escapist medium by
nature, it is a rarity.

Where an earlier dark effort
such as Berlin often tripped into
mawkish expression, Reed
manages to avoid the trap of self-
indulgence in the name of grief.

He frames the larger issue of
death and the acceptance thereof
