Blues lose steam against Royals YES, THEY lost. No, they were not embarrassed, humiliated, outworked and made to wish they were any place but here. By Guido Marziali Contributing Writer Unlike the men_ basketball Blues, the women surprised Douglas College and themselves with a determined performance against the sixth-ranked collegiate team in the nation. The men, to use 2 euphemism, ‘lost’? to Douglas 146-88. It was a fitting conclusion to a demoralizing week in which they lost the host spot at the nationals. In the exciting women’s contest, the Royals won 85-74, although the game was closer than the score. The Blues trailed the undefeated Royals throughout but crept to within a basket twice at the end of the half and inside the last two minutes on precise and timely shooting by Allison Snelgrove, who led her squad with 26 points, followed by Chery! Kinton with 1& and the surprising Zahra Haji, who has been injured most of this season, added 12 points. Douglas coach Richard Norman gave plenty of credit to Capilano. “tT thought the defence wasn’t bad on our part.’ he said. even though his team usually allows 20 fewer points per game. **They couldn’t miss. They were hitting their first shots and they were hit- ting tough shots, well challenged shots. What can you do?”" Capilano coach Dawn Schooler was asking herself the same ques- tion after watching the Blues come frustratingly close to an upset. “Douglas was very tired. We pressured them."’ But she admit- ted to having no illusions going into the game. “Against a team like Douglas, we didn’t expect to win. We ex- pected to come out and play as well as we could and see what happened but we wanted to scare them, we wanted to make them win the game instead of just giv- ing it to them.” said Schooler. If not scared, the Royals were at least worried. At the beginning, Norman was making mass substitutions, sending out players from his bench in groups of three or four. That strategy was con- spicuously absent in the second half, in which Douglas starters scurried urgently around the pe- timeter to challenge the Blues’ hot outside shooters. In the end, the Royals went back to basics and fed the ball to star forward Carrie Carlsen, who led all scorers with 33. Her shooting, together with Lorraine Denis’ dependable contribution from the foul line, sealed the vic- tory for Douglas. Said Schooler of Carlsen: ‘I don’t know what she’s doing play- ing in college. She’s certainly tal- ented enough to be playing any- where she wants. I think, I tell my kids, if you don’t play defence before she ges the ball, don’t bother.*’ Of the men’s game that follow- ed, the 58-point margin of defeat told the whole story. “Our strategy coming in was to get off to a good start. We were lucky enough to get some easy hoops earfy and I think that kind of took the steam out of them,” said Royals’ coach Steve Beauchamp. Said Blues coach Ken Sherk: “Darryl Lawes came to play basketball.”” No other Blues were graced with that compliment. In other action last weekend, the Capilano College Soccer Clu, composed of players from the na- tional champion men’s Blues, tied the Burnaby Mountain Soccer Club 1-1. It was Capilano’s first game in the springe’s Inter Col- legiate Soccer League, which features teams from several col- leges and universities playing as clubs rather than official varsity squads. The varsity season is restricted by the league to the fall tern. The women’s voHesball team lost all three games in a weekend tournament at TWU. Its record is 1-14.
