LOSING THE last two points in a third set tie breaker could be heartbreaking, especially if you're Glenn Richards and you're trying to give your world tennis ranking the leg up necessary to get into higher level tourneys. By ELIZABETH COLLINGS News Reporier But B.C.’s No. | tennis player is unperturbed about his first round defeat last week at the $30,000 Smirnoff Challenger tournament at the Blue Mountain Racquet Club in Burnaby. “It could’ve gone either way. I had a lot of chances. It would have beea a really big victory if I could’ve won it,’’ Richards said of his near three-hour 7-6(9-7), 2-6, 7-6(9-7} loss to James Schor of Miami. “IT was up 5-4 in the tie breaker and had a chance there with two cerves to win it basically and he came up big again,’’ Richards said. “Glenn came as close as he could have without winning,” Gary Winter, program coordinator at Tennis B.C. said. Richards said despite Schor be- ing a more experienced player, the intense match could have gone in either player’s favor. “When it gets down to a tie. breaker in the third I think it’s a 17 - Wednesday, October 11, 1989 - SPORTS Richards puts tennis defeat behind him 3-50 chance. His (Schor’s) rank- ing at that point doesn’t mean much. We both want ‘o win pretty bad.”’ At stake for the 24-year-old North Vancouver native was a lot more than just the Smirnoff tourney. Richards was the sole player from B.C. to make it into the Smirnoff main round. The other B.C. players, including North Vancouver’s Fabio and Stefano Walker and Joseph Brabenec Sr., were knocked out in the qualifying rounds. Richards got straight into the main draw via a much-coveted wildcard awarded to him on the basis of his performance last summer. His access to the main draw earned him one ATP point, plac- trv at HOS in the world. i he won the match, Richards woul’ have vaulted to somewhere in the 900 range. That ranking would’ve provided him with the key to open the door directly to the main draw of satellite circuit tour- naments rather than having to go through the pre-tourney qualifiers. However, Richards isn’t crying over spilled milk yet. He is planning to head to Evucope in January to try his luck there. He said he’s still improving but realizes his tennis years are 4829 Lonsdale Ave. N,.Van. 988-7098 HEALTH DYNAMICS INTERNATIONAL INC.
