“AT CONSTANT dollars, a typi-
cal 1989 Tempo costs less than a
comparably equipped 1984 model,
despite a host of product im-
provements,’’ said Jack G.
Clissold, Ford of Canada vice
president, Sales and Marketing.

“A 1989 Tempo L, equipped
with a popular ‘extra value
package’ that includes air condi-
tioning, dual remote control mir-
rors, electronic AM/FM _ stereo
radio with clock, interval wipers
and sports instrumentation, retails
for $10,995,” he said.

“In 1983, when Tempo was first
introduced, the 1984 model would
have cost $10,027. That’s a dif-
ference of only $968, which also
includes $255 in increased federal
taxes.

“Excluding the taxes, today’s
Tempo buyer is paying only seven
per cent more for this car than five
years ago, while the consumer
price index has risen 25 per cent in
the same period. Today’s Tempo
also includes as standard features
-— essentially at no extra charge to
today’s buyer — a five- instead of
four-speed transaxle, electronic
fuel injection, reclining seats,

- larger wheels and tires and a

high-mounted brake light,’’.
Clissold said.

Today’s Tempo comes in two-
or four-door models, and can be
equipped according to five dif-
ferent series packages. These in-
clude the Tempo All-Wheel-Drive,
which is particularly convenient
for driving in cold weather
climates like Canada’s. All-
wheel-drive allows the driver to
direct power to all four wheels at
the flick of a switch, improving
traction and handling in poor driv-
ing conditions.

Driver-side air-bag supplemental
restraint systems also are offered
as options as GL and LX four-
door models, a feature that
safety-conscious drivers may find
particularly appealing.
