One sees very little about it in the major media. But it is there. Especially in the U.S. And is becoming more apparent. That is evident from the July issue of Atlantic magazine, which is NOT given to the support of -. men in.white sheets. The Adantic is a liberal publication, but fre- quently examines tender subjects, and it has now provided the first detailed review I have seen of how race and the presidential elections are intertwined. According to the story by William Schneider, race is the big joker card down south even if no numbers. It has been obvious for years, of course, that as the blacks moved into the cities, whites were moving out. But the added factor is that as they moved out of the cities, they have also been moving into the Republican Party. Although the U.S. is a vast po- litical checkerboard in which no generalization can be wholly true, . Schneider provides some interest- ing examples of what has been happening. In Chicago, black rac- ‘whites are moving out of the Democratic Party in solid numbers, It has been obvious for years, of course, that as the blacks moved into the cities, whites were moving out. But the added factor is that as they moved oz:t of the cities, they have also, been moving into the Republican Party.” one is shouting it from the housetops. It isn’t just that the Democrats have the erratic Jesse Jackson waiting for a top job if their party wins. The process has been going on for some time, emerging on a large scale in the Chicago elections that gave black politician Harold Washington (now deceased) control of that city a few years ago. The writer provides plenty of evidence. But one quote from ‘‘a disillusioned liberal’? sums it all up: ‘The central fact of American politics is race, The Democrats have black people, the Republicans don’t.’’- That doesn’t mean that the Democrats will win. On the con- trary, whites are moving out of the Democratic Party in solid ism was a big factor in bringing, Washington to power. So there has been a reaction. He goes on: “The Chicago model of racial politics is not being contained. It is spreading. It has....spread to presidential politics. Racial an- tagonism was very close to the sur- face in this year’s Illinois Demo- cratic presidential primary.... “The Illinois vote was deeply polarized along racial lines. Jackson carried more than 90 per cent of the black vote but only seven per cent of the white vote in his home state. In fact, a pattern became evident in the Democratic primaries this year: The higher the percentage of blacks in a state, the worse Jackson did among white voters.” Since that article was written, ice arena gets funding THE PROVINCE has contributed funds to the District of West Van- couver to help pay for enclosing the West Vancouver ice arena lob- by. Ministry of Transportation and Highways NOTICE LANE CLOSURES FOR SCARIFYING WORK CAPILANO CANYON BRIDGE ‘TRANS CANADA HIGHWAY #1 The Ministry of Transportation and Highways will be undertaking scarifying of the deck on the Capilano Bridge, Upper Levels Highway on October 17th, 18th and 19th, 1988. This work will necessitate alternating single lane traffic during the periods 7:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. for these days. ° The Ministry regrets any inconvenience to the public; however, this work is necessary to provide an im- proved deck surface. Every effort will be made to minimize delays during the morning.and afternoon rush periods. T.M. Forsyth District Highway Manager George Dukakis has moved Jackson back a bit in the Demo- cratic hierarchy. But Jackson is not the only fly in the Democratic ointment. People who by tradition were never Republicans have become Republican. ‘‘We've lost the Irish and Italian ethnic votes,”’ a top Democrat in New York is quoted as saying. A second insider stated: ‘The (New York) Republicans are the beneficiaries of racial tensions within the Dem- ocratic Party.”’ Did the Canadian media who covered the Democratic and Republican nominating conven- tions have anything to say about all this? I don’t think so. They may have mentioned the black vote, but were either ignorant of the wider picture or too discreet to, mention it. Which is not surpris- ing, seeing that most of the . American media chose to overlook this story, too. (Also not surpris- ing, considcring that they are heavily pro-Democrat.) But it was a Canadian journalist who first highlighted this aspect of the current campaign. Last year, writing in the Times of London, Peter Brimelow stated: “The two major parties in America actually look quite dif- ferent. Blondism is common among Republicans, reflecting the party’s support from the two larg- est American ethnic groups, British and German. The Democrats are distinctly darker — apart from anything else, black voters now constitute fully 20 per cent of their ~ support. The parties look like sep- arate nations. And in many respects they are.”’ As I’ve told you before, voting-by-race is heading our way, for obvious reasons.
