Kathy Dornan, representative for NSIVC, senses that many pco- ple are not volunteering because they are not aware of the benefits and options. “*Though we have a regular Op- tions calumn in the Sunday North rth Shore News Shore News, it only includes five or six current requests, when we have a file of over 300° oppor- tunities," she said. NSIVC works by taking requests for volunteers from 120 North Shore organizations, and referring interested volunteers to the posi- tions. At the So You Want to Volun- teer workshop, representatives from four agencies will describe their, openings and experienced volunteers will answer questions about their volunteer jobs. LIFESTYLES unteer opportunities Through providing programs such as this, NSIVC hopes to help people chaose successful volunteer experiences. These include the type of people the vol- unteer would like to work with, career, Icisure and personal growth goals. ‘Volunteering is for both parties — the helped and the helper. A satisfying position will benefit both,”* said Dornan. Sandi Mitchell, a volunteer receptionist with NSIVC, is using volunteer work to put her career back on track. Once a successful clerical worker, during periods of unemployment she took retail and nanny positions ‘*just to get by."'
