To help oil the digestive tract, a
Sam Smith’s Oatmeal Stout ($4)
was ordered. The deep brown fluid
was served at room temperature so
as not to chill the senses numb. It
really sticks to your gullet, me
lads.

Main courses tested were Hali-
but and Chips ($6.95) and Plaice
and Chips ($5.50).

Both came with great fried
potato chip beams. The fish,
rather than chopped into two or
three bits, was served in mammoth
single slabs, as dictates the proud
Yorkshire tradition. Halibut and
Plaice were both thick, juicy, sweet
and excellent. The Petticoat Lane
batter was crisp and golden brown.

A side of mushy peas was bright
green and included whole peas in a
sauce that was superb and not
overly thick.

AIL food was served on real
crockery, not styrofoam, newspa-
per, plastic or paper plates, which
added to the overall enjoyment of
the meal.

Service in the packed restaurant
was friendly, though somewhat
tentative. Time spent waiting for
orders can be invested in apprecia-
tion of Petticoat decor, which is a
mixture of British pub modern and
timeless Yorkshire classic. Patrons,
for example, can learn the various
curves and twists of the Yorkshire
dialect from wall hangings: ‘‘He’s
no oi! in his lamp’’- English
translation: A person of question-
able intelligence.

Open from noon to 7:45 p.m.
Tuesday to Thursday, from noon
lo 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and
from noon to 7 p.m. on Sundays,
with takeouts of course, Petticoat
Lane is the best fish and chip res-
taurant on the North Shore.
