FOREIGN REPLANTING METHODS

B.C. reforestat

IT IS estimated that some 7% per
cent of the area logged arnually in
B.C. will require replantiag.

The remaining will regenerate
naturally more than adequately.

As in planning a backyard
garden, the area to be planted may
necd some form of site preparation
and it is at this stage that decisions
must be made.

A number of the methods used
in other countries are not suitable
in many pasts of this province.

In Sweden, Finland and the
south eastern U.S., for example,
huge ploughs, discs or harrows are
often used to nix up the soil and
duff and prepare the ground for
the trees. ‘

While such disturbances of the
soil may create desirable condi-
tions for planting and growing
trees, the same treatment would be
unacceptable in many areas of
B.C.

To cite an example, in planning
the reforestation of a coastal valley
that harbors a significant fish-
beating stream, every effort must

be made to minimize, rather than
increase, soil exposure and thus
avoid siltation problems that could
affect the fisheries resource.
