Mystery star explored

DEEP IN the inner reaches of the
Milky Way is a bizarre object that
seems to defy the laws of physics.
The Mystery of SS433, which
opened recently at the H.R. Mac-
Millan Planetarium, tells the story
of astrcnomers turned detectives as
they struggle to explain the weird
and contradictory reports of a star
some refer to as a ‘‘zoo object.”

Located in the constellation
Aquila, the star appears to be
speeding away from earth and
towards it at the same time. The
thin beams of hot gas that it sprays
out into space twist and _ spiral
across the light years like some
kind of cosmic garden sprinkler.

Astronomers from around the
world have been working for years
to find the one piece of evidence
that will make the puzzle fit, tell-
ing them what mysterious process
created the star system catalogued
as number SS433.

The answers they have found
and the questions those have
prompted make S3433 perhaps the
most bizarre celestial object in our
galaxy.

The Mystery of SS433 will play
Tuesday through Friday at 2:30
p.m, and 8 p.m., and Saturday,
Sunday and holidays at 2:30 p.m.,
4 p.m. and 8 p.m. through to
November 22. Tickets are $4 per
person.
