Lay down the law when travelling with couples From Page 23 must purchase an extended imedical policy for their son for the dura- tion of his trip. ' would also have the parents write and sign a letter of permis- sion for the boy to travel and authorizing you and your husband, as temporary guardians, to make decisions concerning his health and welfare. Don’t forget to have them give you his birth certificate — you may need it crossing the border. Other than that, I don’t see you having much to worry about. Your son will enjoy the trip far more having someone his own age to share the fun. Another fringe benefit is that, depending on the level of respon- sibility of the boys, you may be able to leave them alone for the odd dinner for two. I'd hesitate to leave one child behind, but two are company for each other. I hope everything works out — and quit having nightmares! By the time you get to Disneyland you may want to lose the pair of them. Remember, too, that kids aren’t nearly so rambunctious when they’re on unfamiliar ground. They’ ll stick to you like glue. Dear Barbara: We are planning a vacation this summer with another coupie and want it to be as stress- free as possible. We’ve never trav- elled with other people and I can foresee a few hazards. Have you and your husband ever travelled with another couple? If so, can you give me a few ideas on how to keep things going smoothly? Answer: We have, but only by ac- cident. On one occasion we were staying in Spain, met a couple from Edmonton and spent the rest of the holiday travelling with them. Had a great time! Another time we were spending 10 days in Sorrento, met a Scottish couple in our hotel dining room and travelled around the coun- tryside with them for’ our entire stay. That was one of the best trips we ever had and we all really regretted having to go in opposite directions. I have heard a lot of comments from couples who have done what _you are planning. Some have come home, delighted, and making plans for their next expedition.. Others haven’t spoken to each other since. The two biggest sources of trou- ble are money and space. It helps to discuss these matters before you leave. How will you split expenses? If one couple gets stuck with more than their share sparks will fly. If your tastes in food and drink are similar you can probably split the bili down the middle without a problem. If not, maybe you should agree on sepa- rate checks. Make allowances for spending time apart without hurt feelings. Neither couple should feel guilty about saying, ‘‘Hey, we’re taking off on our own today.” And, if that is said to you, I hope you'll have the good sense to reply, “‘Great idea. We sort of planned on (insert your choice of activity —- preferably one that the others aren’t too keen about).”’ Never share hotel rooms. Get the driving arrangements fig- ured out before you leave. If you’re going to be cabbing it a lot, a kitty is often the vest way to go.
