roiler Bar beef makes the grade From page 24 much-abused hamburger masses can create their own custom-made burger by putting together their own blend of hamburger helper — a small but extremely thoughtful touch of do-it-yourselfism in an era of the overblown burger and its kitchen-sink accompaniment. Available at the fixings bar is an eye-appealing selection of tomato slices, onions, pickles, cheeses, relishes, mayonnaise and mustards, which are all included in the price of any of the restaurant's hamburgers. Besides hamburgers, The Broiler Bar offers such !uncheon items as Smoked Salmon Croissant ($5.25), with cream cheese and avocado slices, and Tahiti Shrimp ($4.95), greys and reds trimmed with neon and silver. For the chronically clumsy, table cloihs are skid-resistant rubber. Background music, surprisingly enough, is somewhat removed from the well-trod modern sound- track with songs from Talking Heads and John Lennon, among others. Service is tentative but friendly. The Broiler Bar also has a color- ful display of enticing desserts such as Fruit Tarts ($2.95) and crumb Apple Pie ($3.50). Though it is not a special occa- sion restaurant or a place to test gourmet dining skills, The Broiler Bar is a surprisingly first-rate diner for families, weary shoppers and wayward business luncheons.
