Indeed, it was a splendid exain- ple of what psychologists call The Law of Certainty’, which states that: ‘The degree of conviction with which a person holds an opi- nion on a given subject increases in proportion to his ignorance of that subject.’’ We were all fascinated to learn that we make $32,000 per annum. Gosh, I have my 1985 T4 right here and it says 1 only made $26,047 in 1985. This is before all personal deductions and taxes. It also includes over $1,000 in voluntary overtime and approx- imately $200 in ‘commissions for flyer delivery, which is highway robbery to private enterprises.*” This latter comment puzzles me because the private sector is free to compete with the post office for flyer business. We get most of it because we are more competitive, how is this robbery? Anyway, 1 am too dumb to fig- ure all this out (being just a letter carrier) but my mommy Says either ft am making $5,953 more than I realize, or the author of your col- umn doesn't know what he is tak- ing about. Had your columnist bothered to talk to a letter carrier, to get our opinion of management's decision to deny home delivery to new sub- divisions, he would have found that we do not like it either. ft is however, a rather typical salary editorial refuted Dear Editor: Regarding News Viewpoint, Deliver Efficiency (August 3). Whoever wrote this article must be sitting on his brains. The repor- ting is very inaccurate with regards to letter carrier salaries. My T4 slip for 1985 shows $27,505.87 gross annual salary. Please inform me of ihe carrier who does make $32,000 annually — with my seniority I can bump him from this position and get that kind of salary. Letter carriers, since their jobs tequire a lot of watking do of course get a lot of exercise. That’s common sense, something you wouldn't have or know about. As for the suntans, well blame God for letting the sun shine, but not the letter carriers. The North Shore News has a lot of its own character defects. Why don't you work on them first be- fore you start making up stories on other businesses? One more point — the $2.21 billion dollars in salaries: did you know that the manager in Ottawa makes over $200,000 annually try- ing to manage the post office? And he doesn’t even get the benefits of any exercise or sunshine. D.A.
