TIPS FOR CONTROLLING INSECTS Keep ACROSS THE country, homeowners are involuntary hosts to millions of uninvited guests: in- sects. Among the most common and most evasive of all indoor insect pests are ants and flies, but they are not the only invaders. ‘““Homeowners are plagued by two very different insect types just about anywhere they choose to live,’* says Dr. Roger Grothaus, an entomology research manager. ‘They are simply those that crawl, and those that fly.’ If ants are a problem in the home, the first step to control is to determine what might be attracting them and learn where they are fin- ding an entrance. First check for food spills and clean these away, then determine where they crawl and try to locate their nest. Check outside of the home for openings that may serve as entry points for them. INSECT CONTROL In addition to cleanliness and finding where such cockroaches, ants and earwigs have made their way into the home, insecticides are an important part of control. A bug killer should be used for im- mediate treatment to kill insects on contact. Insecticides should be used to treat surfaces where the insects are likely to crawl. These products will re- main active up to one month. As the insects move over the treated areas, the insecticides will be picked up, then absorbed by their bodies causing them to die. These products are never sprayed « § in the air, but have a heavy wet spray, or are dispensed as a foam, for application directly to surfaces where bugs crawl. Insecticide is most effective around baseboards, under sinks in cabinets, behind heavy furniture or wherever bugs are likely to hide and crawl. To help control flying insects in your home, such as flies, mos- quitos, moths or gnats, use an in- secticide that can be released directly into the air. CONTACT SPRAYS Many products of this type are packaged in aerosol containers and are often referred to as space or contact sprays. “Indoor spraying for flies is most effective at the brightest time of day. When light is dull, they tend te doze on walis and ceilings, but they buzz around and become active in bright light — they then become natural sponges for one of these insecticides,’’ said Grothaus. Another type of insecticide for Choose the right window THE RIGHT windows in the right places provide homes with fresh air, natural light, good looks and convenience. Some of the more popular wood window styles are double hung, awning, casement, bay, bow and sliding. Windows that contain factory installed weather-stripping minimize air infiltration. Many are also double glazed to limit heat loss through the glass. bugs control of flying pests comes in the form of a solid material im- pregnated with insecticide that provides continuous control.
