street bea Pulls knife on police A 22-YEAR-OLD Surtey man faces five charges after damaging at least four cars on a hit-and-run binge and then pulling a knife on the policeman that tried to take him into custody. The charges were laid after the man rammed a parked car in the 100-block of East Fourth Street early Friday, pushing it into two others, and then driving away from the scene. He was next reported attempting to parallel park in the 100-block of St. George’s, where he struck another car and again fled. Police finally spotted the car and driver and moved in on him when the car stalled while he was at- tempting to escape. The man pulled the knife during a brief strug- gle with police. Charges against the un- identified man are for two counts of hit and run, for impaired driving, for refusing to provide a breath sample and for failing to stop when directed to do so by a peace officer. Campaign °84, an eight- week fund-raising program, is aimed at raising $50,000, a figure that represents about 20 per cent of the society’s annual budget according to funding committee member Rob Darling. ‘*We will survive with or without the $50,000,’’ says Darling, ‘‘but if we get that, we will not only be able to maintain our present level of service but expand on that.’’ Darling says the present level of service is adequate dW rigdieqaagaal All - Sunday, December 11, 1983 - North Shore News Society set $50,000 but nothing more, and that, with the loss of provincial government child care workers due to the restraint program, the funding to hire a child care worker for Emily Murphy house is needed. The society hopes to raise the funding through a cor- porate mailing campaign this week and a mailing to North Shore residences to follow that. As weil as sohciting cash fund-raising target donations — which are tax deductible — the society is also laying the groundwork for its annual charity auc- tron, scheduled for May, 1984, by soliciting for dona- tions of goods and services from those not in a position to donate cash. ‘‘If we don’t meet our goal (on the fund-raising drive) it will mean the facility will be taxed even more than it already is,’’ says Darling.
