couple of hours or a ride
from parents, with the result
that the time they can spend
with their horses is reduced.
“We've lost many
members bécause_ they've
had to go out to Coquitlam,”
says Dennis Macey,
president of the North Shore
Horsemen's Association.
“It's a shame, because it’s
a wholesome activity for
young people,” adds his wife

Mary, who is vice-president
of the 70-member
organization.

The association holds
shows once a month at North
Shore stables, with about 30-
40 horsemen attending.

About a dozen parents of
teenagers displaced from the
North Shore Riding Centre
are trying to lease some land
frem the provincial
government so their children
can bring their horses back
from the Fraser Valley.

Until then parents are
taking turns giving their
children rides to their horses

hopes they will be able to do

He has two horses of his
own left at the stable.

One, a Tobiano pinto
mare named Blossom, was
ridden to over 400 trophies
in horse shows by Lattin’s

was named by a group of
Maplewood School students.

He's selling them.

I wouldn't want to have to
visit them at some place in
the valley, he says.

“It would bring back too
many memories.”

Divorce, American style

WASHINGTON § (UPI)-Di-
vorced American men are
remarrying more often than
divorced women, and the
divorce rate for both black
men and women is soaring,
the Census Bureau reported
Nov. 4.

The bureau said the in-
creasing divorce ratios for
all men lagged behind those
for women in the past
decade, reflecting a higher
incidence of remarriage for
divorced men.

Based on latest figures,
the bureau said five out of
six divorced men remarry,

while three out of four
divorced women tie the knot
again.

In 1970, said the report,
there were 35 divorced men
for each 1,000 married men,
and in 1980 the figure was
79. There were 60 divorced
women for each 1,000
marned women in_ 1970,
while last year that figure
doubled to 120.

The report said the
divorce rates for blacks shot
upward in the past decade —
up by 144 per cent for black
men, up by 147 per cent for
women.

The increase in divorce
for black women overall was
higher than the increase for
any single age, sex or racial
group, the bureau said.

The report — a detailed
breakdown of marital and
living trends noted in a
recent study — also said that
among all age groups per-
sons in the 30 to 44 year old
bracket had the highest

divorce ratio, 125 for each
1,000.

The initial study noted the
number of people living
alone rose from 10.9 million
in 1970 to 17.8 million last
year — amounting to 23 per
cent of the households in the
country. The number of
divorced people living along
more than doubled in the
decade to 3.4 million.
