Youth soccer explodes on N. Shore 6,000 in action this weekend — By BILL BELL The Vancouver Whitecaps North American Soccer League season might be over for 1980, but for the estimated 5,800 young North Shore Soccer players, the soccer year is just beginning. Both boys and girls will be taking to the fields this Saturday and Sunday as 230 Blues change name for coming year Avalon Blues, the 1979-80 winners of the Vancouver Metropolitan Soccer League 3rd division League and Division Cup, have recently changed their name _ to Kypriakis Soccer Club. The NSYSA, largest youth soccer association in B.C., experienced another dramatic growth in registration this year’ ac- cording to Don _ Brown, association president. - trim and the home park will be Kilmer with games scheduled for Sundays at 2 p-m. Officials of the club thanked the Avalon organization for their assistance during the past years, and expressed hope “We're anticipating 5,800 to 6,000 boys and girls, six to 18 years old to be registered ... that’s up from 5, last year,” Brown said. Brown credited the growth in youth soccer activity to the increased popularity of the Vancouver Whitecaps. He also pointed to the low cost of soccer that the association with Kypriakis will be a long and beneficial one. Kypriakis first home game in the second division is this Sunday at Kilmer, 2 p.m. against Dartmen Football Club.
