A7-Wednesday, March 12, 1980 - North Shore News Dear Editor: We have nearly all been aware, I am sure, of the fight put up by two of our North Shore lawyers to advertise their fees. I wonder if we realize that their victory can be a tremendous advantage to the average citizen. We are living in such a complex society that most of us will have an occasion when we would like legal help but the nature of the problem doesn’t warrant searching out a lawyer and engaging him to take care of it for us. My husband and I have had two personal instances in the past few years when, with the help of the self- counsel series of books, and a brief conversation with a lawyer, we were able to put our minds at rest for a very small fee. We were interested in investing in R.R.S.P. a few years ago and a little unsure of which route to take. I was quite impressed with what a well known Income Tax Consultant and publisher of a book’on Income Tax*had to say when he was quest on a on a radio talk-in show. Unfortunately, we did not read his book or we may _with our approval. have heeded his warning not to consult an individual with a vested interest in his ad- vice. As it happened, we made an appointment with just this type of individual. There we were, green as grass, putting al] our trust into someone who bought stocks for us that we had never heard of, to a greater amount then we could invest in R.R.S.P. and supposedly For- tunately we woke up before we signed anything. We phoned a lawyer friend and he gave us permission to use his name and assured us that we were within our legal School probe biased? Dear Editor: I refer to the recent article in the North Shore News entitled ‘Team set to evaluate North Vancouver Community Schools’. It must be emphasized that the terms of reference of this evaluation. do not include a determination of whether the community school system is necessary or desirable in North Van- couver. That issue has already been decided for us by the School Board, ably assisted by the apathetic general public and a few dedicated fanatics. With all due respect to the chosen evaluation team, I question the impartiality of its selection which was made by the School Board, most of whom are valid supporters of the Community School System. The extent to which this team, both of them are teachers and employees of the School District, can afford to the impartial and objective is questionable. It is evident that an adverse report by them would reflect poorly on their colleagues, and could conceivably result in some teachers’ positions, notably the Community School co-ordinators, being placed in jeopardy. And really, how could this team Protest the ‘ghastly’ hunt. Dear Editor: A week or two ago you reminded us that the ghastly baby seal massacre would soon be upon us. An impartial report can only result from an evaluation that is un- dertaken in its entirety by an agency that has no direct interest in the results. This evaluation exercise will obviously be self-serving to the community school Proponents in general, and the school co-ordinators in particular and is no doubt a prelude to a plan for the Teachers vertising saved them money rights to back down on the purchases. More recently we have gone through the process of registering ourselves as a small business. We visited the Law Shopped and purchased some of their books (I believe they are also available at the library). We still felt as though we would like to have someone pnt it all together for us. We made a half-hour appointment with lawyer Jack James to ask some specific questions and are now registered at very little cost. Quite often I hear people, completely bewildered and who need legal advice, phone up a. radio station asking what to do about a Situation they have got themselves into. I think these lawyers are doing us a favor by ad- vertising that some legal advice doesn’t have to be a financial set-back.
