The committee of one is available to assist public officials, community groups, media repre- sentatives, students. and other members of the public with their inquiries about all facets of the Christian Science religion. Hill emphasizes that the post is not a public relations position — she is not there to sell the church to people, but to be 2 source of in- formation for those who want it. ““We’re spokespersons but we don’t initiate anything,’’ Hill says of the committees on publication, which were first established at the turn of the century. Hill says that the church keeps a fairly low profile, and is probably best known for its international daily newspaper, the Christian Science Monitor. Christian Scientists are also known for their decision not to ac- cept medical aid, says Hill. **We are rather looked askance at by people in general,’ she notes, re- ferring to the common reaction of people to the Christian Scientists’ stand on medical treatment. Although some may seek medi- cal aid in very serious c2ses or because of family pressure, most Christian Scientists, says Hill, choose to heal their ills — be they physical, mental or emotional — through prayer.
