Although these counter- feit bills are of good quality, there is much you can do to prevent yourselves from becoming victim of a coun- terfeit loss. The fist provided is only a sample of what you can look at to determine if a bill is gen- uine or counterfeit. If you have a bill with questionable authenticity, or wish to learn more about counterfeit detection techniques, contact your local police department. There are several things you can look at when accept- ing a Canadian $10 or $20 bill. Don’t rely on one method only — look at sever- al before making up your mind if a bill is real or coun- terfeit. Look at the paper. Real Canadian currency does not have a shine or sheen to it. The countertsit which has been produced is made with cheep bond paper, for exam- pic photo-copy paper. When ight is directed on to a bill, the light will be absorbed by real currency and reflected by counterfeit. Fee] the paper. Real Canadian currency is made with several printing meth- ods. On the front face, the large “CANADA™ across the middle of the bill is done with Intaglio print. This ink lies on the surface of the paper, and as a result has a rough feel to it. Look at the eves of the portrait, On the counterfeit bill the iris looks like a black dot. If you look closeiy at a real bill, the eyes are made of circles which get closer and closer together, however never touch, Look at the background printing. On the front face, above the large “CANADA” there is a serpentine effect of “10” in micro printing. The micro printing “10” on the counterfeit bills are blurred, unlike the crisp and clear look of a real bill, Look at the series. The counterfeit $20 bills which have surfaced are an older serics (1979) — and do not have the hologram on it. If you are issued a bill which you believe to be ques- tionably counterfeit, do not accept it. Contact your local police department to investi- gate the bill. If you are in possession of a counterfeit note, contact your local police. Do not try to pass any counterfeit notes.
