Mustany/GT/Cohra impressions: Hard to imagine the car that started the sporty-car revo- lution is now 33 years cid. At last count, more than seven million Mustangs have been sold, and sales show no signs of slowing. In a true why-mess-with- success approach, the three available coupe and convert- ib!e models continue with only slight changes. The base Mustang features a 3.8-litre V6 that produces a modest 150 horsepower. The GT moves you intu V8 territory, accompanied by 215 horsepower. But the real fun is the Mustang Cobra, with its limited-pro- duction 4.6-litre DOHC, 32- valve V8 matched to a five- speed transmissicn (an ‘automatic is not available on the Cobra) that brings a whopping 305 horses to the party (insert your best Tim Alien grunt here). The Cobra rides on 17-inch cast alu- minum wheels, which are optional on the GY. For 1997, all Mustangs receive an encoded ignition key sys- tem that will start the car only if the cede matches the one built into the electronic ignition system. At that time, the 1998 Windstar will be offered with an extended driver's-side door, called the family entry system, that will allow access into the rear seating/storage area. For now, the Windstar con- tinues targely unchanged. The base engine is a 150- horsepower 3.0-litre V6, which is standard an the GL. A 3.8-litre, 200-horse V6 powerplant is eptional on that model, and standard on the LX. The bigger engine gives the Windstar the abili- ty to tow up to 1,600 kilo- grams. Available in both two-door coupe and four- coor sedan versions, the Grand Prix has a much raci- er look, accentuated by a more steeply angled wind- shield, deep, rounded wheel openings and a longer (by eight centimetres) wheel- base inat heips give the car its lowered appearance. Not only is the look completely fresh, but the Grand Prix’s suspension is also brand new. Three engine choices are available to Grand Prix coupe or sedan buyers. A 3.1-litre 160-horsepower V6 comes standard in the SE. Move up to the GT-series and the base engine becomes the 3.8-litre 195- horsepower 6. Add the GTP performance package inte the mix, and Pontiac ups the ante accordingly with a Supercharged version of the 3.8 that kicks out an impressive 240 horsepower and 280 !b-ft of torque. All three engines come with a four-speed automatic trans- mission, but the GTP gets a brand new version built to handle the rigors of shifting its performance-oriented supercharged engine. Ail Grand Prix models arrive fairly weil equipped, includ- ing power windows, power remote outside mirrors, traction control (except supercharged model), cruise control, tilt steering wheel and four-wheel disc brakes. The new Grand Prix offers great value and perfor- mance, and should generate plenty of showroom traffic and sales.
