Bice Dear Editor: 1 was surprised and disap- pointed to read in your Oct. 27 issue a letter titled “Say no to $2m track upgrade” in which the author, who lives near Mahon Park, opposes the proposed upgrade to that park’s running track. Although [ have not been involved in this debate to date, Tam moved to write in sup- pert. of Bylaw No. 6827, which I believe is long over- due. No one disputes the well- documented benefits of physi- cal exercise, such as running, jogging or walking, for people of all ages. Such activity is to be encouraged. The best way to’ do so is to provide a safe, con- venient facility, as citizens in other communities, such as Burnaby and Surrey, have Stop wasting WV tax dollars Dear Editor: | The West Vancouver clec- tion should not be dull, but it will be, unless the candidates ‘address some major issues to which previous councils and all candidates except for Lynn Coules ignored at the first all- candidates meetings. The “North. Shore. News stated that West Vancouver, in spite of privatized garbage col- lection, has the largest number of municipal employees and the highest ‘tax rate of all munici- ities in the province. It also ‘has municipal employees mak- ing in the region of $100,000 per year getting paid overtime. We also have a $3-million _museum and archives building that 90% of the citizens do not even know or care where it is. It is time to do what all businesses. do periodically and that is to hire a firm of efficien- cy experts to do a thorough” assessment of the whole munic- ipal operation and senior per- sonnel. We also have to serious- ly consider whether we should hold a referendum on all capital projects over $2 million. Taxpayers’ dollars have been wasted far too long and it has to stop’if we are to retain our quality of life here. John S. Catchpole West Vancouver SG an eC done. The proposed upgraded track at Mahon Park would be such a facility. With a central location and ample parking, it would also be convenient and easily acces- sible, especially to persons tre- quenting, the nearby soon-to- he-constructed seniors’ centre, and to North Shore schools and students who will no longer have to travel over town for spring track meets, as they have for several years. Although the author of “Say no...” denies the so- called NIMBY syndrome, the reasons he gives for opposing Bylaw No. 6827 have no merit. He says thar fencing will be necessary and use of the facili- ty will therefore be limited or reduced. This is not correct. NY NANT ERG VW ST SH Se ANE CE oe n track update overtue The bylaw calls for no secured fences, and | have been assured by city officials that there are no such plans. Similar tracks in Surrey and Richmend are open to the public at all hours and, despite being “state of the art,” are heavily used by runners, jog gers and walkers. His second objection, that we should support projects with “broader appeal,” is diffi- cult to understand in light of his own admissions that the park “is used from early a.in, to late night every day rain or shine by young and old” and he has “always enjoyed seeing the park so well utilized by al of our citizens.” His third objection is to an increase in taxes, but city offi- cials have advised that the Mahon Park site was selected PAUL TURNER tor DISTRICT COUNCILLOR A proven, experienced candidate for North Vancouver District *& Five years as a District Councillor ‘* Lions Gate Hospital Board +* GYRD Labour Relations Board * North Vancouver Emergency Measures Committee : * North Vancouver Schoo! No one wants our civic leaders to spend our tax-dol- lars carelessly or unwisely. Where, however, a highly- desirable social end can be achieved at a reasonable price, where the benefits far out- weigh the cost, our leaders should act and we should sup- port them, I strongly urge a “YES” vote to Bylaw No. 6827 on Nov. 16.
