Lions Bay poet touched many lives BY LAYNE CHRISTENSEN Community Reporter ROSALIND MacPhee was itn adventurer. She was a unit chief for the B.C. Ambulance Service in Lions Bay. a founder of the area’s search and rescue team. an avid kayaker and Jover of the outdoors, an award-winning writer and poet. wife, mother and friend. As an advocate for breast cancer awareness, she shared her personal experience and touched the lives of many before succumbing to the dis- ease last Friday. She was 50. “Rosalind was a_ private person who chose to be a very public person in her cause to fight breast cancer once she vas diagnased.” said Pat Wade. a close friend of 23 years. MacPhee discovered she had breast cancer in 1991 and told of her battle with the disease in Picasso’s Woman. Published in 1994, the book won her the Canadian Authors Association's literary non-fiction award last: year. MacPhee had alse previously published three books of poetry and a short novel, The Paris Notebook, Picasso’s Woman has sold 5.000 copies in Canada and is to be released in the U.S. later this month. It is also to be translated and released in Germany, Norway, China. Israel, the Philippines and Japan. The book is an intimate account of MacPhee's experience with cancer and her relationship with her friends, husband Peter and her two daughters, Katherine and Jenny. It is also a call for action and a reminder that the search for a cure to breast cancer continues. “We've been in the dark ages about this disease for a very long time.” MacPhee told the News last June. She received numerous accolades for her work to raise awareness of the disease that is reported to strike one in nine women in Canada. Last year the village of Lions Bay honored MacPhee with a citizen of distinction award, This year she received the University of B.C. MeMahon’s sister, Jackie Ralph Jamieson, who is a breast cancer survivor, remembers MacPhee for her strength and determination to beat the disease.
