WHO TO CALL: Fashion Editor Layne Christensen 985-2131 (178) HE OLD saying “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure,” is cer- tainly true for the collage artist who may gather together the most benign of objects to produce a fanciful yet cohesive work of art. By Layne Christensen Fashion Editor Mojo Stocker does just that, combing through flea markets, thrift stores and antique - malls, looking for that special piece to form the centrepiece to her newest work. In the basement studio of her 18th Street home there are drawers upon drawers of dis- carded costume jewelry, buttons, shoes, purs- es and hats that will eventually find their way into a Mojo Stocker original. : No item is too precious for this Montreal native as her husband David, a furniture restorer and art therapist, can attest. A furtive search for an errant cowboy boot ended with the discovery it had been incorporated into one of Stocker's latest commissions, a whim- ‘sical pastiche of menu ingredients, kitchen tools and pop-culture icons destined for the -Old Boot Eatery, an-Italian restaurant in Gibsons. In amongst the slices of focaccia ‘(preserved with a special lacquer), ‘onion peels, bay leaves and whole garlic, antique coffee grinder, spaghetti-box labels and cheese grater was David's boot, barely dis- cemible beneath the paflems of gold-painted elbow macaroni. Nor are figurines of fine porcelain or bisque immune from the artist’s clutches. If an arm or leg is broken off, all the better. The vendor is sure to drop the price and besides, nobody rejected the Venus de Milo because she was missing a limb. “When something is broken, you shouldn't just throw it out.” counsels Stocker. “You can do something with whatever you have." That includes family memorabilia. Stocker has begun to accept commissions for family portraits created from trinkets. old photos, war medals and heirloom jewelry. The concept works well for Father’s Day. anniversaries and memorials, and the resulting framed work is a personal and lasting record of an individual's life. “The collage can be passed on to the fami- ly and no piece will be lost,” she says. Still, the portraits she creates from vintage clothing and hats are perhaps the most fun and .arguably the most closely related to her pro- fession. A portrait photographer by trade, Stocker recently quit her more-than-full-time job tak- ing class portraits of school kids in order to devote more time tc her craft. Mojo Stocker’s three-dimensional collages will be on display at North Vancouver City Hall Jan. 18 through Feb. 14, The exhibition opens with a reception on Thursday, Jan. 18.
