registrations. You may select a course option offered by any of the Squadrons

m. either by day of the week or by training location. The Boating and VHF Radio
Courses are available to everyone. Al! advanced courses require a successful
completion of the Boating course to register.

The Boating Course
Subjects covered:

Maritime Radiotelephone (VHF)

You will learn the phonetic alphabet, as

mw. well as correct radiotelephone operating

procedures. And includes the Department
of Communications’ Restricted
Radiotelephone Operator's Certificate
Exam. Single $25, Couple $40

Prerequisise: Boating Course —

Course content: Pilcting knowledge is
expanded to include relative bearings and
the running fix; effects of current and
leeway,.and new skills in coastal
navigation. Cost: $90

Advanced Piloting
Prerequisite: Seamanship Course
Course content: Charts; compass; steering
and timing a course; tides and tidal
- currents; effects of current and leeway;

 . methods of determining position; running

fixes; aids to navigation; electronic aids;
the sextant. Cost: $125

Junior Navigator

Prerequisite: Advanced Piloting Course

This is the first of a two-year celestial
navigation course. The navigator applies”
the sciences of cartography and
astronomy to set a course and determine a
position at sea, much as the pilot uses
landmarks. Cost: $125

Navigator

Prerequisites: Junior Navigator Course
Course content: Advanced systems of co-
ordinates by celestia) bodies, identifica-
tion, use for navigation, sight reduction
and the use of navigation tables, Traverse,
Mercator and Great Circle Sailing,
navigational astronomy, solar and lunar
phenomena. ¢ Cost: $12 25

Seamanship P. Power

Course ‘content: Power trains, engine
controls and instruments; handling and
cruising under power; mooring and
anchoring; legal responsibilities; engine
and trouble diagnosis; fuels and fuel
systems; electrical! systems; cooling and
lubrication; maintenance. Cust: $90
Seamanship Sail

Introductory course of sailing techniques.
Course content: Spars and rigging; sails
and theory of sail action; sailboat
handling; piloting under sail, and cruising
under sail (day sailers and keel boats)
Cost: $90

Marine Electronics

Course content: Covers electricity; DC
and AC systems; wiring; galvanic and
stray-current corrosion, and electrical
interference. Lightning protection and
marine radiotelephone. Cost: $90

Weather

Course content: Atmosphere; pressure;
wind; temperature and moisture; stability
and instability; air masses; frontal
weather; clouds; precipitation and fog;
general circulation; tropical hurricanes;
wave theory, and forcasting the weather.

Cost: $90

Marine Maintenance

Course content: Seasonal maintenance
and repairs to wooden, fibreglass and
metal. hulls are stressed. Sections are
devoted to maintenance for electrical and
mechanical systems; spars, rigging and
ground tackle; fire and safety protection;
moorings and berths; trailers; tools and
fittings. Cast: $90
