Lonsdale options for development go public . PUBLIC INPUT will soon be ‘invit- ed on four proposals for the devel- opment of a prominent Lower Lonsdale site. NORTH VANCOUVER CITY COUNCIL By Grace Golightly The four options for the proper- ty, situated on the east side of Lonsdale between 3rd Street and 4th Street, range from a five-storey, 40-foot (12 m) building to a 16- storey highrise of 150 feet (45 m). ~All options provide both resi- dential and commercial space. Only the 40-foot building option would comply with both the area's present zoning and with the Official Community Plan (OCP). The second option, which calls for two six-storey buildings, would comply with the OCP, but would require zoning. . If either the third option, a sin- gle 12-storey building, or the high- rise option are pursued, both rezon- ing and an amendment to the OCP would be required. ne omen INGA WHEATON 926-7831 / 644-9450 CELL Service with a smile and enthusiasm. McLean was justone of many people who told council that given a choice, they would prefer lo see natural choices made when it comes te the disinfection of the Lower Miaintind’s water supply, Not one speaker was in favor of using chloramine (a mixture of bleach and ammonia that has a Jonger residual life in water than chlorine buat is potentially more harmful to fish) as either a primary or secondary disinfectant, Most wanted an alternative to chlorine as well, For Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) and health board representatives the meeting was a case of same-song-but-slightly-dif-: ferent-cast to the meeting held ear- lier at the North Shore Winter Club, where not one of 46 speakers was in favor of the chloramine option. But the latest mecting was con- vened by district council rather than the GVRD. Mayor Murray Dykeman told the meeting that council had want- ed to provide an opportunity of “having the benefit of the opinions and concerns of our residents” before the) GVRD- Water Committee recommends a water treatment option. . Whether the 50 people who showed up were truly representa- tive of district opinions or not it was abundantly clear that they all shared fittle confidence in the management . of Vancouver’s watersheds and its approach to obtaining public feed- back on drinking water safety.
