Spielberg’s film a monumental work Dear Editor: Re: Hollywood Propaganda — Doug Collins, March 9 lam writing to express my disappoinunent in the Nocth Shore News* publishing of the above-mentioned column. Why you find it necessary to publicize such drivel is beyond me! Why the author begrudges the Jewish people the right to remember and educate about one of the darkest periods of world history and the lessons we can learn from it, is even more beyond me. However, I write today to implore you to publish this letter as an open invitation to Mr. Collins to go see Schindler's List. I understand from his column that Mr, Collins is very concerned about other and all human atrocities the world over: please note his references to: “Two million Armenians killed by the Turks ... the slaughter of 500,000 Indonesians ... the uprooting of 10 million Germans and the murder of tens of thousands of them by the Red Army,” therefore surely he has taken the time to learn that Steven Spielberg’s recent monumental work is actually a celebration of the righteousness that man can do to man. This “movie” can be used as a tremendous educational tool which seeks to glorify man’s tummanity to man and thereby discour- age further evil and senseless atrocities by one group of people to another. _ Also, please ask Mr. Collins if he is aware that these Jews, who he begrudges the dubious privilege of remembering their horrific past, and who ‘were the impetus behind both the book being written and the movie Schindler's List being made have also founded and incorporated “The Oskar Schindler Humanity Foundation,” whose mission it is to seek out people who have achieved acts of great righteousness the world over and in any conflict. The purpuses of the foundation are to honor such people of right- eousness and provide education about their deeds thereby seeking to make role models of good not evil — surely these are values we all ptirsue and hold sacred, / Tam shocked that a man can slam a movie that seeks to find good / inan evil situation, a movie which agrees with Mr. Collins and says not al! Germans were evil — in fact the movie says some achieved great righteousness, and a movie which says we should never allow this to happen again ... not to anyone! Why publish a column that is so destructive, so malicious, so manipulative of reality and shameful in its denial of the magnitude of violence done to the Jews in the Holocaust? Van war dead Dear Editor: Last November you published a letter concerning our intention to create a memorial book to our North Vancouver war dead. The initial response to our pro- ject has been most encouraging. We have gathered enough information pow to indicate where the problems and “grey” vreas are, We expected that information about the First World War casual- ties would be very hard to find. This has proved true with one exception: a gentieman who pre- sented us with a detailed history of his late grandfather. We have no knowledge of casualties from the Boer War and Korean War. Merchant Navy casualties sare a dark mystery.
