Free speech not the issue Dear Editor: 1 hope you would not want to encourage the intolerance that is evidenced in the letters I have received in support of Doug Col- lins’ column. We live in a world of almost six billion people — most of whom do not look like white Europeans. In my opinion, Doug Collins is a talented writer who has steadily drifted to extreme positions. Of course he sinoutda’t be cen- sored, but neither should he be assisted in proinoiing views that divide our society. Columnists enjoy a rare privi- lege. While 1 do not have to read them, I should also have the op- portunity to reject their opinions. When extreme views are drop- ped on my doorstep in a free advertising paper, | believe I have the responsibility to point out that a columnist’s inclusion in a throw-away paper involves con- siderably more subsidy and publisher support than does sur- vival in a paper which has to sell Equal justice for all people Dear Editor: Over the past 16 years that | have been here, I have been ex- posed to Doug Collins’ writings despite wishes that somebody will say no to publishing him. What will it take, Mr. Collins, for you to realize that this country in particular and the world at large does not belong to people of the Angio-Saxon European heritage? ‘What will it take for you to re- alize that your ancestral home is somewhere in Europe just as that of others are in Africa or Asia? What will it take for you to re- alize that it is people like you and the judge and jury in the Rodney King case that perpetrate animosi- ty and hatred among different races? What will it take for you to re- alize that without us, you are nowhere and vice-versa? Wilt it take forever for you to see the oneness of humanity? What all people ask for is respect, equal justice and rights applicable to all of humanity. Ezcadi U.P. Your publisher has responded to my criticism by saying that I in some way owe my election to free coverage in your paper. If that’s true, I’m sorry I forgot to send a thank you letter. I do have over $7,000 in advertising receipts from your paper just for the election period. Are you saying that the only way to respond to Collins is to refrain [from advertising in your paper? The issue is not one of censor- ship or freedom of speech. Nor is the issue whether Collins should receive the same opportunity to express opinions as any other member of the community. The issue is whether a newspa- per that is thrown free on every door should provide space on a routine basis for the promotion of extreme, intolerant views. I would hope that Collins could be employed to use his considerable skills for less disruptive purposes. David D.
