Joy Metcalfe JOY TELLS ALL LAST FRIDAY was the surprise 75th birthday din- ner party reception at the Gleneagles Golf Course in West Van saluting the founder of Crest Realty, Ed Aveling. - And it was a sight to behold as Ed walked into what he thought was a quiet Friday night dinner with his wife, Beverley. Was he ever shocked! Crest Construction was formed in 1957 while Crest Realty began in 1959. They now have three of- fices with more than 100 sales people and about 18 office sup- port staff. Beverley and the pres- ent staff at Crest had rounded up all the old employees to arrive in advance at the clubhouse. . When Ed walked through the door about 150 people all joined in a sincere ‘‘Happy Birthday, Edt” He was truly very surpris- ed... sos That same Friday night every costumer in town had to be in Seventh Heaven. It was a night for the humorous, the whimsical, the dressy and the outrageous! It was the Vancouver Opera Association’s (VOA) annual fund- raiser, A Night of a 1001 Dinners. Usually, I’m on the media bus checking out many of the 33 loca- tions, but this year I was invited to play Queen Isabella of Spain to Ruy Paes-Braga’s King Ferdinand at his Forr Seasons Hotel. This was the elegant dinner evening saluting Christopher Col- umbus and his discovery of the New World. Best sport of the af- fair had to be the vice-president and general manager of the hotel who was the epitome of the king in 1492 — ermine cape, feathered hat, brocade pantaloons and white pantyhose, which he kept vainly trying to straighten. We began cur evening in the Oak Room with a champagne reception then wandered throughout the lobby to the Four Seasons premier ;estaurant, Chartwell, The very ornate and very heavy period gowns came from Watts Costumes and we were all grateful for the wonderful air condition- ing. Hotel PR lady Kathy Eccles looked very elegant in slim ruffles and lace, Linda Lehr was pixie-ish in sheer Elizabethan teal, blonde Gail Craig was regal in her satin black and pearls while red-haired Wanda Halbert sparkled and glit- tered in her elaborately decorative gold-hooped gown. Though an attractive brunette, Hde Gauer made a surprisingly suitable Christopher Columbus, Norman Rosenblum was hand- some in his black tuxedo while af- fable Herbert Drechsler looked ED ARLING was surprised by birthday party. Sunday, June 7, 1992 - North Shore News - #9 PE PCA Ir Ta naa an ST TP AE THE VANCOUVER Opera Asscciation’s A Night of 1001 Dinners was a good reason to dress in costume. Joy Meicalfe was invited to play Queen isabella to Ruy Paes-Braga's King Ferdinand. The opera estimates that the event grossed over $40,000. great in his Columbus outfit. Opera rep Anne Merchant was particularly taken with Herb’s shapely legs. I'm not sure what the visiting hotel guests thought but they seemed definitely in- trigued. There were 32 other dinner par- ties on the same evening in sup- port of the VOA. There was the Royal Bank’s Gone With The Wind, a mafiosa wedding at Delta Place, the Sultan’s Feast at the Coast Plaza, an Evening in Provence at the Pa.ific Palisades while the B.C. Lions and their cheerleaders whooped it up at the Ramada Renaissance’s outdoor barbecue. I can only hope they had as much fun as we did! Estimates are the evening raised a tidy $40,000 for the hard-working VOA fundraisers... There were so many con- gratulatory bouquets that David Ho could have opened a new flower shop business as well. There was a huge ice carving, a large H with a flying dragon and, of course, the gleaming and pricey automobiles — Jaguars, Porsches and Range Rovers. The affair began at 4 p.m. with champagne corks popping, the Vancouver Pipe Band playing and 800 guests arriving. The catering was handled by one of David Ho's other business interests — the University Golf Club with lots of Pepsi on hand from his Grey Beverage Company as well. Along with the other 800 guests offering congratulations were the former MCL owners, Bob Lee and Henning Brasso. Jack Poole was travelling... As the honorary chairman of the Variety Club’s Dog-a-thon at Mahon Park a week ago, I’m delighted to report that it was a great success. I have never seen so many different shapes, colors or sizes of happy pooches! North Van City Mayor Jack Loucks and his judging panel definitely had their work cut out for them.
