32 ~ Sunday, July 21, 1991 - North Shore News LIFESTYLES Propose children make premarital agreements DEAR MISS MANNERS — My husband and I have been happily married for 27 years.and have three children, noue of them married yet. When we were married, we had very little money and neither did our parents, Through hard work and luck, we have been able to accumulate a consid- erable net worth. Our financial adviser has pro- posed that when our children marry, we should have them establish a premarital agreement so that in the event of a divorce, they cr their children would receive the money that we would leave to them or give them during our lifetime. While this makes good sense, it feels awkward to put their pro- spective spouses inta this position. It's as if we want to protect our finances without putting much confidence in the longevity of the marriage. While we know this is the sen- sible thing to do, how do we pres- ent it to 4 prospective spouse without hurting that person's feel- ings? Classes for adults will take safeguards at a time when parties to a marriage are aghast at the very idea that they might’ ever quarrel over, of all things, money. What you would be doing would be providing your children with the opportunity of con- trasting the materialism of your generation with their own roman- ticism. Be sure to allow them to disassociate themselves from your pessimistic provisions — ‘I hate this, but my parents iasist."’ Nevertheless, it is not ceally polite for a prospective in-law to talk about the possibility of divorce. The correct way for you to phrase putting your money in the name of your children but not their mates is to say that you are providing them with ‘‘nest eggs’’ in case of unspecified emergencies. The Victoria Art Gallery puts on an annual tour — so does Johan- nesburg, and Mexico City,’’ ac- cording to Florence. The pair were asked why they didn't organize the tour in Van- couver. Florence’s reply is simply because of the overwhelming in- terest from the North Shore community and its resident artists. “AN of the artists were wildly enthusiastic when approached,” she said. Some artists, like Bell, will demonstrate their technique; all will be available for questions. “1 would also suggest that, some bargains will be available,”’ said Florence. adding that some pieces will go for as low as $200. Tickets may be purchased at various locations, including the Deep Cove Gallery, The Avant Gardener, North Vancouver $n Community Arts Council, and Opus Framing in West Vancouver. Ticket purchasers will receive a brochure containing a map of ar- tists’ homes, but Florence suggests participants should also bring a good city map. Volunteers are needed for tick- et-taking at the door. Anyone who volunteers for a morning or after- noon shift will receive a free ticket to the tour. POOLSIDE BBQ! EVERY SUNDAY 2-8 PM. She will bless the use of your knife rests if you ! promise not to laugh at her as- paragus holders. In the 18th and 19th centuries, knife rests were employed so that the sume knives could be used for more than one course. We are talking about the transition period between the time when people simply whipped out their own hunting knives. which they had used for killing small animals and picking their teeth, and the time when spiffy service required show- ing how many different place set- tings you could produce. Individual knife rests are placed by each place setting. They are similar to napkin rings in that however charmingly they are made, they serve as living proof that you don’t always wash everything every time it is used. A 4 door, automatic By AM/FM Cassette 4 Fuel injected Digital Clock Remote Mirrors and much more ... FROM verbal and written salutations 1 should use? Is this an honorary knighthood title? GENTLE READER — As your faithful dictionary told you. your friend is an officer of this chivalric order. He is not a Knight, because then he would use K.BLE. ¢Knight Commander) or G.B.E. (Knight Grand Command- er), and be addressed as ‘‘Sir’™ (untess he becume an honorary knight, because, for example, he was an American, in which case he would use the letters after his name but not the ‘‘Sir’’ before). Members of the order below the rank of knight use the appropriate letters for (in ascending order) member, office or commander (M.B.E., O.B.E. or C.B.E.) after their names, but no special honorific before. Thus your cor- respondent is addressed as ‘‘Mr.,”” both in speech and in writing, but with the letters following his name on the envelope. Jn the British style, the envelope would use his name alone followed by ‘‘Esq., O.B.E."” Doesn’t this make you appreci- ate the simplicity of North Ameri- can correspondence? Suly 24--Ongoing.
