TRAVEL 31 - Sundav, May 13, 1990 - North Shore News There’s more to Reno than gambling EVERY COUPLE of months I get an interesting little newsletter from the Reno-Lake Tahoe area Convention and Visitors Authorities. (To get on the mailing list: $5 for three years, Magazine and Showguide, P.O. Box 8956, Incline Viliage, NV, 89450.) The last issue is of particular in- travel wise Barbara McCreadie Ee terest to shoppers. For a city the size of Reno you’d be amazed at how good the values and selection are. . The secret, of course, is that Reno is not only ‘‘The Biggest Lit- tle City in. the World,” as the famous arch proclaims, but it may also be one.of the richest. : Many of the visitors to the city are locked into tours. If their gambling is going sour they look for alternative entertainment and shopping is high on the list. The newest concept in marketing all over the States is the factory outlet mall where many famous name manufacturers . group together to market their excess stock at greatly reduced prices. Look for: - Olga, Van Heusen and Mikasa on the south shore, Lake Tahoe. There is also another mall (no Re €& SHOP TH > sunday | name given) in the same area. - Another ‘‘strip’’ of outlets near the “Y’ at South Lake Tahoe. -~ Tahoe Donner Factory, just off Interstate 80 in Truckee, in- cluding Blass Shoes, Home Again housewares, Bannister Shoes, Van Heusen, Leggs, Hanes, Bali, Dan- sk, Gorham Silver and Boston Bi- jou — jewelry. - A new one in Sparks, off I-80 near Wild Island Recreational Park (may not be completed yet). Another tip: Watch for com- plimentary bus shuttles being pro- posed. None except one from Harvey’s Resort at Stateline was firm at the time of printing but my guess is that it won’t take long un- til these are scooting all over the place. kan Another shopping tip for Reno: Do you entertain a lot? If you do, don’t miss Resco, Nevada at 960 S. Virginia St. I can’t resist a visit almost every time we drive to Reno. Heavy serv- ing dishes like the last one I brought home are just too much for buses or airlines. Resco is a new and second-hand warehouse for restaurant supplies. This is where fancy restaucants find things like china skelis ic serve seafood salads. This is also where I bought a marvellous commercial-sized chaf- ing dish for $98, complete with all the combinations of inserts, all stainless steel. Each one can go di- rectly from my oven onto the © steam tray, warmed by sterno. It took up half the back seat of the: car to bring home, but was worth the trouble. tee Antique shopping is great fun in Shoppers Drug Mart Safeway * SuperValu * Zellers >» wednesday * Woolco * Consumers Distributing * Cloverdale Paint * EFatons > friday Watch for our Real Estate Home Section. If you miss any of these flyers call North Shore News Distribution 986-1337 * delivered to selected areas only Reno. There are times when Brian wishes that antique shops were il- legal — especially when I drag him out of a cozy casino for a tour. There is quite a cluster of them just behind the main casino area (east), easy walking distance from Virginia St. A good place to start is the An- tique Collective, 490 Mill St. The last time I was there there were several attractive little restau- rants and delis nearby — no sense in my providing a list as you know how fast things change in the food industry! But I found the sales people in the Collective very helpful — just ask and they'll direct you to the current favorite(s). kat Patrons at any Nevada casino are encouraged to drink. Cocktails are available at the snap of the dealers’ fingers for anyone playing table games. They are free, but you’re expected to tip the waitress. Drinking and gambling is dan- gerous. It’s hard enough to remember that those little red chips represent $5 when you're sober. My complaint has been that it’s difficult to get anything non- alcoholic other than coke, coffee or bar orange juice. The good news from the maga- zine is that the Eldorado (one of the best clubs in Reno) just had a big contest. it was a mix-off hosted by BADD (Bartenders Against Drunk Driving) and the tastiest non-alcoholic creations are now being featured at the club. wet Brian and a big group of his friends recently ganged together and made a trip to Reno just to play softball, you understand. The fact that he took along his golf clubs and an undisclosed wad of cash — and no softball glove — alerted me to the fact that they might have ulterior motives. They flew Fiesta 3000 — the price was right and the 757 lovely. Food good, too. The group was lodged at the Colonial and there were no complaints. “ ROSEWAY T Selected Cruises 1990 NOV. For golf, they found a course called Wild Creek. Brian’s quotes: “Golf cart mandaiory unless you're in Gretzky shape. Lots of water. Many shots blind off the tee unless you know the course. Best played in the spring and fall as it would be hotter than hell mid- summer. Reasonable rates: off- season cost about $20 including the cart.’” As for the ‘‘wad of cash”’ that went on holiday with him, much of it liked Reno so well it stayed If you can afford a vacation You can afford a cruise vacation For more details call 985-7447 (SHIP) 1823 Capilano Rd. oe — Special Prices Free Air on most sailings Out of Africa — Mombassa, Zanzibar, Madagascar, Seychelles and on to India — real adventure in sump- tuous care and comfort with ROYAL VIKING LINE OCT.
